The Porsche 918 Spyder is a limited-production mid-engine plug-in hybrid sports car manufactured by German automobile manufacturer Porsche. The 918 Spyder is powered by a naturally aspirated V8 engine, developing at 8,700RPM, with two electric motors delivering an additional for a combined output of and of torque. The 918 Spyder's 6.8kWh lithium-ion battery pack delivers an all-electric range of under the US Environmental Protection Agency's five-cycle tests. Production began on 18 September 2013, with deliveries initially scheduled to begin in December 2013, and a starting price of ≈€781,000 (US$845,000 or GB£711,000). In automotive engineering, a mid-engine layout describes the placement of an automobile engine in front of the rear-wheel axles, but behind the front axle. Michael Mauer
Michael Mauer (born 1962) is a German automobile designer. He is the Chief Designer at Porsche. He has previously worked for Mercedes-Benz and Saab. Career Mauer studied design from 1982 to 1986 at the Hochschule Pforzheim. His first job after graduating was with Mercedes-Benz in Sindelfingen. In 1989 he was appointed Design Project Leader for the Mercedes-Benz V-Class. In 1995 he was promoted to Head of Department and took responsibility for the new A-Class, SLK and SL models. In 1998 Mauer moved to the Tokyo design studio as general manager. A year later, he moved back to Europe and was in charge of design at Smart. In June 2000 he left Mercedes to join General Motors and worked for Saab as Executive Director Design. In 2003 he became responsible for Advanced Design at General Motors Europe.
