Poole Park Railway
The Poole Park Railway is a miniature railway that runs through Poole Park in Poole, Dorset, England. The line runs throughout the year, weather permitting. The 32-person capacity railway carriages are wheelchair accessible. They are liveried in green which alongside the yellow branding of the railway pay homage to Southern Railway that operated in the area from 1923 to 1947. The carriages are pulled along a 10 1⁄4 inch gauge track by a diesel engine currently on loan to the railway courtesy of the Newlyn Downs Branch line at Lappa Valley, a miniature railway in Cornwall. History In 1949 Southern Miniature Railways Ltd started this gauge railway. They also operated miniature railways in Stokes Bay, Bognor Regis and Southsea. Poole Park
Poole Park is an urban park adjacent to Poole Harbour in Poole, Dorset, England. The park was opened during the Victorian era and has remained popular with visitors ever since. It is open all year round and hosts a number of events. History The park was constructed on land donated by Lord Wimborne and was opened by the Prince of Wales in 1890. The park was built on former meadows and marshes by the town centre adjacent to Poole Harbour and covers an area of , of which include the park's large man-made lake and ponds. Poole Park Zoo was operated from June 1963 until it fell out of favour in February 1994. Although small, at one time it boasted a Himalayan black bear. The park was designated a Conservation Area in 1995, and in 2007 a £2 million project was undertaken to dredge the lake and create five small islands and two raised reed beds. Lappa Valley Steam Railway
The Lappa Valley Railway is a minimum gauge railway located near Newquay in Cornwall. The railway functions as a tourist attraction, running from Benny Halt () to East Wheal Rose (), where there is a leisure area with two miniature railways. History Treffry's Tramway In 1843, Joseph Treffry suggested building a tramway between Par, Cornwall, Par and Newquay, with a branch line to the East Wheal Rose silver lead mine, which at the time was entering its most prosperous period. Treffry spent six years trying to overcome public opposition to the tramway and was forced to modify his intended route. Ford Sidevalve Engine
The Ford Sidevalve is a side valve (flathead engine) from the British arm of the Ford Motor Company, often also referred to as the "English Sidevalve". The engine had its origins in the 1930s Ford Model Y, and was made in two sizes, or "8 HP", and or "10 HP". The early engines did not have a water pump as standard, instead relying on thermosiphon cooling as the Model T engine had. A water pump was added in 1953 for the 100E models when the engine was re-engineered to the point that few specifications are identical between the early and the later series. The Sidevalve engine was used in many smaller Fords as well as farm vehicles, commercial vehicles and a marine version in boats. Production of the engine was stopped in 1962. Windscreen wipers were often driven by the vacuum generated in the inlet manifold. Poole Borough Council was the unitary authority responsible for local government in the Borough of Poole, Dorset, England. It was created on 1 April 1997 following a review by the Local Government Commission for England (1992), becoming administratively independent from Dorset County Council, and ceased to exist on 1 April 2019. Purbeck Miniature Railway
Purbeck Miniature Railway is a gauge miniature railway, located at The Purbeck School near Wareham, Dorset, England. Construction started in the late 1980s in co-operation with the Weymouth & District Society of Model Engineers and has closed due to building works on The Purbeck School. The line runs from a passenger station at Monument, around the main playground, before crossing a bridge and passing through a tunnel to reach the second station where the main sheds are located.
