Pontang
Pontang is a district in the Banten province on the island of Java, Indonesia. Location The Ciujung, a river, enters the sea at Pontang. The Ciujung discharges into the Banten Bay. Historical Pontang port and the Ciujung river used to be important for carrying merchandise into the interior. Tomé Pires, who wrote of the region around 1515, said Pontang was one of the busy and crowded ports of the Sunda kingdom. The harbor was smaller than that of Banten, but the only one where large ships could anchor. The city was beautiful, with the harbor at the river bank near the sea shore. Rice, pepper and food were sold. To guard against Muslim influence the king banned trade with Muslim merchants from Java. By the end of the 17th century the "sultan's canals" had been built for the purpose of irrigation between Markasana and Kanari, and between Pontang, Tanara and Bensung. Serang Regency
Serang Regency (Sundanese language, Sundanese: ) is a Regencies of Indonesia, regency of Banten province, Indonesia. It is located in the northwest corner of the island of Java. The administrative center of the regency is at Ciruas, while the capital of the province is the independent municipality of Serang (''Kota Serang'') which was split off the regency in 2007. Serang municipality is about 10 km from Old Banten, the eponymous former sultanate's capital. Merak, Banten, Merak, a major port and ferry terminal, is located at the northwest tip of Java, within the independent municipality of Cilegon. Serang Regency and its capital have experienced a heavy influx of residents as Jakarta continues its outward growth; some planning agencies consider it to be part of the metropolitan area. Ciujung
The Ciujung (Ujung River) is a river in the province of West Java and Banten on the island of Java, Indonesia. Location The rivers in Banten, the westernmost province of Java, run roughly parallel to each other. The main ones are the Peteh, called the Banten on the lower reaches near the city of Kota Banten, the Ujung, which enters the sea at Pontang, the Durian, which enters the sea at Tanara, the Manceuri, and the Sadane, which rises in the mountainous region of Priyangan and in 1682 formed the border between the Dutch East India Company (VOC) territory and Batavia (modern Jakarta). Tambakbaya
Tambakbaya is a village in the Banten province on the island of Java, Indonesia. Location Tambakbaya is in the district of Cibadak in the Lebak Regency in Banten. As of 2010 the village had a population of 5,469. Tomé Pires (1465?–1524 or 1540)Madureira, 150–151. was a Portuguese apothecary from Lisbon who spent 1512 to 1515 in Malacca immediately after the Portuguese conquest, at a time when Europeans were only first arriving in Southeast Asia. After his arduous experiences in India and the East Indies, he headed the first official embassy since the 14th century from a European nation in China (Portugal, to the Chinese Zhengde Emperor, during the Ming dynasty), where he died. Pires was apothecary to the ill-fated Afonso, Prince of Portugal, son of King John II of Portugal. He went to India in 1511, invested as "factor of drugs", the Eastern commodities that were an important element of what is generally called "the spice trade". Stamford Raffles
Sir Thomas Stamford Bingley Raffles (5 July 1781 – 5 July 1826) was a British statesman who served as the Lieutenant-Governor of the Dutch East Indies between 1811 and 1816, and Lieutenant-Governor of Bencoolen between 1818 and 1824. He is best known mainly for his founding of modern Singapore and the Straits Settlements also called Malaysia and Brunei. Raffles was heavily involved in the capture of the Indonesian island of Java from the Dutch during the Napoleonic Wars. The running of day-to-day operations on Singapore was mostly done by William Farquhar, but Raffles was the one who got all the credit. He also wrote ''The History of Java'' (1817).
