Polvo
Polvo is an American indie rock band from Chapel Hill, North Carolina. The band formed in 1990 and is fronted by guitarists/vocalists Ash Bowie and Dave Brylawski, with Steve Popson playing bass guitar and Brian Quast playing drums. Eddie Watkins was the band's original drummer, but did not rejoin the band upon its reunion in 2008, after breaking up in 1998. The band was critically acclaimed from the outset. Biography Formation and early releases Polvo formed in 1990 in Chapel Hill, North Carolina, United States. Their original lineup consisted of vocalists/guitarists Ash Bowie and Dave Brylawski, bassist Steve Popson, and drummer Eddie Watkins. Bowie and Brylawski met in a Spanish class at the University of North Carolina and shared an affinity for music released by SST Records and local rock band Let's Active. Cor-Crane Secret
''Cor-Crane Secret'' is the first studio album by North Carolina indie rock band Polvo. It was recorded at Duck Kee Studios in Raleigh, North Carolina, and released on Merge Records in 1992. Singles Different versions of "Can I Ride" and "Vibracobra" appeared on the band's first two 7-inch releases in 1991. Another version of "In the Hand, In the Sieve" appeared on the band's split 7-inch EP with Erectus Monotone. Reception According to Jason Anderson of ''Allmusic'', the "Critically embraced" debut of the band "deserves notice for its scope and imaginative guitars. However, ''Cor-Crane Secret'' sounds brittle when compared to the work of more accomplished '90s guitar bands like Built to Spill, Pavement, and Sonic Youth." Ash Bowie
Ashley Hideyo "Ash" Bowie (born c.1968) is an American musician. In 1990, in Chapel Hill, North Carolina, he formed the band Polvo (as guitarist and vocalist) along with Dave Brylawski, Steve Popson, and Eddie Watkins. Polvo was influential in the then-thriving indie rock scene in the United States. In 1994, he became the bassist for Helium, after their previous bass player left the band. Both bands broke up in 1998. In 2000 Tiger Style Records released the album ''Yesterday ...and Tomorrow's Shells'', a collection of Bowie's four-track home recordings, under the name Libraness. He occasionally plays guitar in the band Fan Modine and bass guitar in the BQs, and he has indicated that two new Libraness albums are nearing completion. Polvo reunited in 2008. They toured and recorded a new album, ''In Prism'' (2009). Their sixth and final album to date, ''Siberia'', was released in 2013. ''Today's Active Lifestyles'' is Polvo's second studio album. It was produced by Bob Weston and released on Merge Records in 1993. Cover Early versions of the cover art featured red tigers in the yellow colour field, but these were soon removed due to a lawsuit from its painter Andy Freeburn. Release The album was released on Merge Records. "Tilebreaker" was released as a 7" single with the song "Chameleon" and the instrumental "Tiara Fetish" on the B-side. ("Tiara Fetish" would later appear, with lyrics, as the song "Watch the Nail" on the Merge compilation ''5 Rows of Teeth''.) Reception The album went on to receive mostly positive reviews upon release. Tracy Fey of ''Allmusic'' called it "an excellent album with many layers." ''Celebrate the New Dark Age'' is an EP by Polvo. Background & Release It was recorded at Duck Kee Studios by Jerry Kee and released on Merge Records in 1994. Reception The ''Allmusic'' review is quite positive, with reviewer Tracy Frey calling it "filled with the band's chaotic, twisted guitars and sarcastic, witty lyrics." The tracks "Fractured (Like Chandeliers)" and "Tragic Carpet Ride" were singled out as "two amazing guitar songs" and "Every Holy Shroud" was compared to Pavement. Robert Christgau gave the EP a one-star "honorable mention" indicating "a worthy effort consumers attuned to its overriding aesthetic or individual vision may well like", picking "Fractured (Like Chandeliers)" and "Every Holy Shroud" as highlights and writing: "how dark can it be if it's so full of guitars?" This Eclipse
''This Eclipse'' is a 1995 EP release by indie rock band Polvo. It was recorded and mixed by Brian Paulson in Hillsborough, North Carolina on August 21–22 that year, mastered by John Golden and released on Merge Records. Recording The album was recorded and mixed by Brian Paulson, who would go on to do the same for their 2009 post-reunion album ''In Prism''. Reflecting on the experience, guitarist Ash Bowie said in an interview with ''Tape Op'': "we liked the way it sounded. It wasn't the most well prepared for record we've done, but you could hear everything. It sounded good. We didn't have to negotiate about how loud everyone's parts should be — it's all there, just right, nothing else to say." Math Rock
Math rock is a style of progressive and indie rock with roots in bands such as King Crimson and Rush as well as 20th-century minimal music composers such as Steve Reich. Helium (band)
Helium was an American alternative rock band fronted by Mary Timony. The band formed during the summer of 1992. Between 1992 and 1997, they released two full-length albums, three EPs and several singles. History Under the original moniker of "Chupa," the band's founding members were Mary Lou Lord; Jason Hatfield, Juliana Hatfield's brother; Shawn King Devlin; and Brian Dunton. Devlin and Dunton were both also in the band Dumptruck before founding Helium. Mary Timony, formerly of the band Autoclave, replaced Mary Lou Lord on vocals and guitar shortly after formation, as Lord was reluctant to use electric instrumentation. Following Lord's departure, the remaining members changed the band's name to Helium. Timony was known for her husky, vibrato-less and monotone singing style. Half-cocked (movie)
''Half-cocked'' is a cult music road movie, made in 1994 in Louisville, Nashville and Chattanooga. The movie tells the story about a group of high school teens who steal a van full of music equipment and pretend to be a band, called "Truckstop" (played by the band Rodan) in order to stay on the road. When the band starts playing gigs, their sound is largely inconsistent and incoherent, however, over time, the band becomes increasingly competent in their musicianship. The film puts much emphasis on the indie/alternative rock subculture. Many indie rock bands such as Polvo, Grifters, Freakwater, Versus, Slant 6, Rodan, Unwound, Helium, Sleepyhead, Crain, and Ruby Falls are featured in the movie. Members of Rodan and Grifters play in the movie as well as actors. The movie appeared in a small run on VHS and was unavailable for years until its 2007 re-release on DVD. Touch And Go Records
Touch and Go Records is an American independent record label based in Chicago, Illinois. After its genesis as a handmade fanzine in 1979, it grew into one of the key record labels in the American 1980s underground and alternative rock scenes. Touch & Go carved out a reputation for releasing adventurous noise rock by the likes of Big Black, the Butthole Surfers, and The Jesus Lizard. Touch & Go helped to spearhead the nationwide network of underground bands that formed the pre-Nirvana indie rock scene, and helped preside over the shift from the hardcore punk that then dominated the American underground scene to the more diverse styles of alternative rock emerging at the time.
