''This Eclipse'' is a 1995 EP release by indie rock band Polvo. It was recorded and mixed by Brian Paulson in Hillsborough, North Carolina on August 21–22 that year, mastered by John Golden and released on Merge Records. Recording The album was recorded and mixed by Brian Paulson, who would go on to do the same for their 2009 post-reunion album ''In Prism''. Reflecting on the experience, guitarist Ash Bowie said in an interview with ''Tape Op'': "we liked the way it sounded. It wasn't the most well prepared for record we've done, but you could hear everything. It sounded good. We didn't have to negotiate about how loud everyone's parts should be — it's all there, just right, nothing else to say." Polvo
Polvo is an American indie rock band from Chapel Hill, North Carolina. The band formed in 1990 and is fronted by guitarists/vocalists Ash Bowie and Dave Brylawski, with Steve Popson playing bass guitar and Brian Quast playing drums. Eddie Watkins was the band's original drummer, but did not rejoin the band upon its reunion in 2008, after breaking up in 1998. The band was critically acclaimed from the outset. Biography Formation and early releases Polvo formed in 1990 in Chapel Hill, North Carolina, United States. Their original lineup consisted of vocalists/guitarists Ash Bowie and Dave Brylawski, bassist Steve Popson, and drummer Eddie Watkins. Bowie and Brylawski met in a Spanish class at the University of North Carolina and shared an affinity for music released by SST Records and local rock band Let's Active. Brian Paulson
Brian Paulson is an American musician, record producer and audio engineer from Minnesota, best known for recording albums by Slint, Uncle Tupelo, Son Volt, Superchunk and Wilco. Paulson grew up in Bemidji, Minnesota, but moved about 200 miles south to Minneapolis after graduating from high school and started playing with Man Sized Action, which released two records, ''Claustrophobia'' and ''Five Story Garage'' on Bob Mould's Reflex Records label. He made many friends in the Chicago-Minneapolis musical pipeline, touring with reputable producer/recording engineer Steve Albini. Through Albini, Paulson met David Grubbs and eventually worked with him on an album for his band, Bastro. Paulson's career as a record producer didn't take off until he recorded Slint's final album, ''Spiderland''. The album was recorded in Chicago in four days. Trouser Press
''Trouser Press'' was a rock and roll magazine started in New York in 1974 as a mimeographed fanzine by editor/publisher Ira Robbins, fellow fan of the Who Dave Schulps and Karen Rose under the name "Trans-Oceanic Trouser Press" (a reference to a song by the Bonzo Dog Doo-Dah Band and an acronymic play on the British TV show ''Top of the Pops)''. Publication of the magazine ceased in 1984. The unexpired portion of mail subscriptions was completed by ''Rolling Stone'' sister publication ''Record'', which itself folded in 1985. ''Trouser Press'' has continued to exist in various formats. Tape Op
A tape operator or tape op, also known as a second engineer, is a person who performs menial operations in a recording studio in a similar manner to a tea boy or gopher. They may act as an apprentice or an assistant to a recording engineer and duties can consist of threading audio tape, setting up microphones and stands, configuring MIDI equipment and cables, and sometimes pressing the relevant transport controls on the recorder or digital audio workstation. Abbey Road Studios always assigned at least one tape op to each recording session. History and prospects The role of tape op was a useful entry into a professional recording environment, and several went on to successful careers as engineers and record producers. Ash Bowie
Ashley Hideyo "Ash" Bowie (born c.1968) is an American musician. In 1990, in Chapel Hill, North Carolina, he formed the band Polvo (as guitarist and vocalist) along with Dave Brylawski, Steve Popson, and Eddie Watkins. Polvo was influential in the then-thriving indie rock scene in the United States. In 1994, he became the bassist for Helium, after their previous bass player left the band. Both bands broke up in 1998. In 2000 Tiger Style Records released the album ''Yesterday ...and Tomorrow's Shells'', a collection of Bowie's four-track home recordings, under the name Libraness. He occasionally plays guitar in the band Fan Modine and bass guitar in the BQs, and he has indicated that two new Libraness albums are nearing completion. Polvo reunited in 2008. They toured and recorded a new album, ''In Prism'' (2009). Their sixth and final album to date, ''Siberia'', was released in 2013. ''In Prism'' is Polvo's fifth studio album, and their first since 1997's '' Shapes''. It was recorded by Brian Paulson and was released on Merge Records on September 8, 2009. The track "Beggar's Bowl" was streamed online. Reception ''In Prism'' received a Metacritic score of 79 based on 14 reviews, indicating a generally favorable critical reception. Jason Lymangrover of AllMusic writes: "Polvo's first studio album since 1997's Shapes, 2009's In Prism is a solid return to mathy form. Although 12 years is a long hiatus, it's hardly noticeable that time has passed, with the exception of a few machinery and personnel updates ..Along with getting mathy and ultra-precise, the band takes the opposite approach and elongates passages, stretching songs into psychedelic space rock territory and surpassing the eight-minute mark on several occasions. Hillsborough, North Carolina
The town of Hillsborough is the county seat of Orange County, North Carolina, United States and is located along the Eno River. The population was 6,087 in 2010, but it grew rapidly to 9,660 by 2020. Its name was unofficially shortened to "Hillsboro" during the 19th century. In the late 1960s, residents voted to change the name back to its original, historic spelling.
