Half-cocked (movie)
''Half-cocked'' is a cult music road movie, made in 1994 in Louisville, Nashville and Chattanooga. The movie tells the story about a group of high school teens who steal a van full of music equipment and pretend to be a band, called "Truckstop" (played by the band Rodan) in order to stay on the road. When the band starts playing gigs, their sound is largely inconsistent and incoherent, however, over time, the band becomes increasingly competent in their musicianship. The film puts much emphasis on the indie/alternative rock subculture. Many indie rock bands such as Polvo, Grifters, Freakwater, Versus, Slant 6, Rodan, Unwound, Helium, Sleepyhead, Crain, and Ruby Falls are featured in the movie. Members of Rodan and Grifters play in the movie as well as actors. The movie appeared in a small run on VHS and was unavailable for years until its 2007 re-release on DVD. Suki Hawley
Suki Hawley is an American indie filmmaker and a partner in the production and distribution company RUMUR. Either solo or with Michael Galinsky, she has directed low-budget fictional narratives but has mostly concentrated on documentaries in recent years. Early life and education Hawley is a native of Dallas, Texas, where she was born in 1969. In her youth, she enjoyed playing video games. Crain (band)
Crain was an indie band from the late 80s and early 90s from Louisville, Kentucky. The band was similar to Slint and Rodan, as a part of the math rock and post-rock genres. They were formed after the demise of the Louisville band, Cerebellum. Crain released two full-length albums and a handful of 7" records. Ian Svenonius
Ian F Svenonius is an American musician and singer of various Washington, D.C.-based punk bands including Nation of Ulysses, the Make-Up, Weird War, XYZ, Escape-ism, and Chain and the Gang. Between his numerous projects, Svenonius has released more than 22 full-length albums and over 20 singles, EPs, and splits. A published author and online talk show host, Svenonius' projects share a tongue-in-cheek, radical left political ideology. His first band, Nation of Ulysses, which released its first record in 1990, was highly influential in the punk scene but dissolved in 1992. After a short-lived side-project called Cupid Car Club, Svenonius formed the Make-Up in 1995, who combined garage rock, soul, and liberation theology to make a new genre they dubbed "Gospel Yeh-Yeh". Jeff Mueller
Jeff Mueller is an American vocalist and guitarist best known as a member of the math rock bands Rodan, Shipping News and June of 44. His bands have been critically recognized for being key forerunners in the development of post-rock, math rock and post-hardcore. Additionally, Mueller released a single solo album, entitled '' Fold and Perish,'' in 1999 on Monitor Records. He lives in New Haven, Connecticut. Biography Jeff Mueller attended college at Kansas City, Missouri at the Art Institute of Kansas City for two years. While in high school, Mueller struck up a bond with guitarist Jason Noble, who shared his musical interests. In 1991 they founded the Hip Hop project King G & the J Krew. June of 44 is an American rock band which was formed in 1994 from ex-members of Rodan, Lungfish, Rex, and Hoover. The band's name refers to the period during which writers Henry Miller and Anaïs Nin corresponded. The band toured extensively, reaching as far as Australia. They were a collective from 1994 to 2000, and reunited in 2018. Their style consists of a post-hardcore and math rock base, while their later releases delve into experimental jazz, ambient dub and angular post-punk. Their debut album ''Engine Takes to the Water'' (1995) drew comparisons with both Slint and Will Oldham. The following year's ''Tropics and Meridians'' saw the band compared to Tortoise and The For Carnation. The Make-Up is an American post-punk band from Washington, D.C. formed in 1995, consisting of ex- Nation of Ulysses frontman Ian Svenonius on vocals, James Canty on guitar and organ, Steve Gamboa on drums, and Michelle Mae on bass guitar. The Make-Up were joined in late 1999 by a fifth member, Alex Minoff (of the groups Golden and Extra Golden), who played guitar with the group until the band's dissolution in early 2000. The Make-Up combined garage rock, soul, and a self-styled liberation theology to make a new genre they called "Gospel Yeh-Yeh".
