Point Arena Rancheria Roundhouse
The Point Arena Rancheria Roundhouse, in Mendocino County, California near Point Arena, California, was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1990. It has also been known as the Manchester Rancheria Roundhouse and was established around 1905. It is the largest and perhaps the only surviving building with significant association to the religious life of Native Americans in the area of Point Arena, California. It is a Pomo Indian dancehouse, where religious ceremonies were held. The religion by then mixed traditional beliefs with ghost dance era developments and with features of Christianity, in the last phase of evolution of the Pomo religion. It includes a cross atop the building, and a center post from 1890 which was incorporated into the construction. Point Arena, formerly known as Punta Arena (Spanish for "Sandy Point") is a small coastal city in Mendocino County, California, United States. Point Arena is located west of Hopland, at an elevation of . The population was 460 at the 2020 census, making it one of the smallest incorporated cities in the state. Its main street is part of State Route 1, California's coastal artery. Along with a number of other Mendocino County coastal communities, Point Arena was associated with the hippie and subsequent counterculture groups. The economy is largely geared toward serving the summertime tourist industry. Pomo
The Pomo are an Indigenous people of California. Historical Pomo territory in Northern California was large, bordered by the Pacific Coast to the west, extending inland to Clear Lake, and mainly between Cleone and Duncans Point. One small group, the Northeastern Pomo, lived in the vicinity of present-day Stonyford in Colusa County, separated from the core Pomo area by lands inhabited by Yuki and Wintuan speakers. The name Pomo derives from a conflation of the Pomo words and . It originally meant "those who live at red earth hole" and was once the name of a village in southern Potter Valley near the present-day community of Pomo, California in Mendocino County. The Ghost Dance ( Caddo: Nanissáanah, also called the Ghost Dance of 1890) was a ceremony incorporated into numerous Native American belief systems. According to the teachings of the Northern Paiute spiritual leader Wovoka (renamed Jack Wilson), proper practice of the dance would reunite the living with spirits of the dead, bring the spirits to fight on their behalf, end American westward expansion, and bring peace, prosperity, and unity to Native American peoples throughout the region. The basis for the Ghost Dance is the circle dance, a traditional Native American dance. The Ghost Dance was first practiced by the Nevada Northern Paiute in 1889. Garcia River
The Garcia River is a river on the northern coast of California, in southern Mendocino County. The river's watershed covers and its mainstem is long. The watershed receives of precipitation per year near the coast and inland. The watershed's elevation ranges from sea level near the ocean to in the Coast Range.
