Pohjaslahti
Pohjaslahti is a village and former municipality of Finland at the time of its existence in the Häme Province, now in the Pirkanmaa region. It was divided between Vilppula and Virrat in 1973. Pohjaslahti was the last rural municipality to be created in Finland, which happened in 1941. It bordered Vilppula, Ruovesi, Virrat and Keuruu. It also bordered Pihlajavesi until 1969, when it was merged into Keuruu. History Pohjaslahti has existed at least since 1564, when it was mentioned as ''Pohialaxi''. A farm named Pohjaslahti was established earlier in the 16th century. At the time, it was a part of Ruovesi, which was separated from Pirkkala in 1565. Ruovesi was mainly settled by Tavastians and the dialects of Ruovesi and Pohjaslahti are Tavastian dialects. Pihlajavesi, Keuruu
Pihlajavesi (historically also known as Pihlainen) is a town and a former municipality of Finland, which in 1969 was merged into the municipality of Keuruu, located in the Central Finland region. Geography Pihlajavesi borders Ähtäri, Vilppula, Virrat and Pohjaslahti, and before the municipality merger also bordered Keuruu. At the time of the merger, the population of Pihlajavesi was over 1,700 people, but this has since then decreased to under 500, although in the summer months the number increases significantly due to holiday-makers and owners of summer residences. The eponymous Lake Pihlajavesi is located within the municipality, and connects via Lake Tarjanne to the Kokemäenjoki basin, which drains into the Bothnian Sea. Häme Province
The Province of Häme ( fi, Hämeen lääni, sv, Tavastehus län) was a province of Finland from 1831 to 1997. In 1997 the southern parts with Kanta-Häme, Päijät-Häme was merged with the province of Uusimaa and Kymi into the new Province of Southern Finland. The northern part with Pirkanmaa was merged with the provinces of Vaasa, Central Finland, Turku and Pori into the new Province of Western Finland. The province corresponds roughly to the current regions of Kanta-Häme, Päijät-Häme and Pirkanmaa. Vilppula
Vilppula was a former municipality of Finland. Neighbouring Mänttä was merged into it on 1 January 2009 to form the municipality of Mänttä-Vilppula. The municipality was unilingually Finnish. It was located in the province of Western Finland and was part of the Pirkanmaa region. The municipality had a population of 5,457 in 2005 and covered an area of 571.26 km² of which 99.90 km² was water. The population density was 10.5 inhabitants per km². The work force mainly consisted of industry and service, these accounting for 50 and 39 percent of total workforce. Population was estimated to be at a slight decline. The Kolho village in Vilppula is located to the north. Another village, Pohjaslahti, is located northwest from the Vilppula centre. Mänttä-Vilppula ( sv, Mänttä-Vilppula, also ) is a town and municipality of Finland. The municipalities of Mänttä and Vilppula were consolidated into a single municipality on January 1, 2009. It is located in the Pirkanmaa region. The town has a population of () and covers an area of of which is water. The municipality is unilingually Finnish. Mänttä is a former town and municipality of Finland. It was merged with the municipality of Vilppula to form Mänttä-Vilppula on 1 January 2009. Savonians ( fi, Savolaiset, Savonian: ''Savolaaset'', ''Savolaeset'') are a subgroup ( ''heimo'') of the Finnish people who live in the areas of the historical province of Savonia. History Savonians are descendants of Tavastian and Karelian peasants who, during the Middle Ages, had settled in the areas that would later become known as ''Savonia'' in order to find new lands suitable for slash-and-burn agriculture. During 16th and 17th centuries, many Savonians emigrated to Eastern Norway and Central Sweden were they became known as the Forest Finns. Tavastian Dialects
Tavastian dialects ( fi, Hämäläismurteet) are Western Finnish dialects spoken in parts of Western and Southern Finland. The dialect spoken in the city of Tampere is part of the Tavastian dialects. The Tavastian dialects have influenced other Finnish dialects (especially the Southwest Finnish dialects). Dialectal features Pronunciation of D Where Standard Finnish has /d/, the Tavastian dialects have either /r/ or /l/ in its place. The ''r''-pronunciation is the more common one. The ''l''-pronunciation is encountered on two separate areas: in the eastern boundary of the dialect area as well as in a smaller area which includes Akaa and Tammela to name a few. Therefore, ''lehdet'' (leaves) can be pronounced as ''lehret'' or ''lehlet''. Tavastians ( fi, Hämäläiset, sv, Tavaster, russian: Емь, Yem, Yam) are a historic people and a modern subgroup (heimo) of the Finnish people. They live in areas of the historical province of Tavastia (historical province), Tavastia (Häme) and speak Finnish language#Dialects, Tavastian dialects.
