''Planxty'' is the first album by the Irish folk group Planxty, recorded in London during early September 1972 and released in early 1973. Overview Because of its dark cover, ''Planxty'' is sometimes referred to as "the black album." Author Leagues O'Toole has written that the album "crystallises the 1972 set" performed live by the band during their first year of touring. The album features a variety of traditional and modern Irish folk songs and tunes. It was influential in popularising this genre. The last track revealed the impact of Balkan folk music on mandolinist Andy Irvine. The traditional song "The Blacksmith" concludes with Irvine playing "Blacksmithereens", a tune reflecting the influences he gathered during his travels in Eastern Europe. Although ''Planxty'' is nominally the first album by the band, all four members performed together on Christy Moore's previous album '' Prosperous'', which opened with the same song, "Raggle Taggle Gypsy/ Tabhair dom do Lámh". ...

Tabhair Dom Do Lámh
"Give Me Your Hand" (Irish: ''Tabhair dom do Lámh'') is a tune from early 17th century Ireland by Rory Dall O'Cahan. It is one of the most widely recorded pieces of Irish traditional music. Composer According to Edward Bunting, in The Ancient Music of Ireland, this harp tune was written in about 1603 by Rory Dall O'Cahan. This tune, revived by Seán Ó Riada, was originally a composition of the blind Derry harpist Ruaidri Dáll Ó Catháin. He wrote it while (in) Scotland, where he had a disagreement with a Lady Eglington. Sí Bheag, Sí Mhór
''Sí Beag, Sí Mór'', "Small Fairy Mound, Big Fairy Mound", is an Irish folk tune. The title uses the word ' Sí', the Irish for 'fairy mound'. Dictionary of the Irish Language: síd, síth' Origins The tune is usually attributed to blind harpist and singer Turlough O'Carolan (16701738) as his first song, written to the tune of "The Bonnie Cuckoo" (Roud 24351). One author describes it as a "beautiful old Irish air, usually played simply and leisurely, and occasionally played as a waltz". Sí Mór (Sheemore) and Sí Beag (Sheebeg) are the names given to two small hills, situated close to each other in south County Leitrim, said to be ancient burial sites, and to a site in Carolan's birth county of Meath. Mickey MacConnell
Mickey MacConnell (born 1947) is an Irish musician and songwriter. Life and work MacConnell was born in Bellanaleck near Enniskillen in County Fermanagh, Northern Ireland. He is the youngest member of a musical family. He worked in Dublin for Irish Press Group and, later, with ''The Irish Times''. MacConnell began writing songs very early in his life. In 1965, he wrote ''Only Our Rivers Run Free'' - a song that describes the natural world being damaged by the Irish border and that has been described by Stuart Bailie as "political but not hectoring". This encouraged him to seriously devote himself to writing music when he moved to Listowel, County Kerry, where he lives with his wife, Maura. MacConnell has released only two albums. Reel
A reel is an object around which a length of another material (usually long and flexible) is wound for storage (usually hose are wound around a reel). Generally a reel has a cylindrical core (known as a '' spool'') with flanges around the ends (known as the ''rims'') to retain the material wound around the core. In most cases the core is hollow in order to pass an axle and allow the reel to rotate like a wheel, and crank or handles may exist for manually turning the reel, while others are operated by (typically electric) motors. Construction The size of the core is dependent on several factors. A smaller core will obviously allow more material to be stored in a given space. The Jolly Beggar
The Jolly Beggar, also known as The Gaberlunzieman, is Child ballad 279. The song's chorus inspired lines in Lord Byron's poem "So, we'll go no more a roving". Synopsis A beggar comes over the hills one day, and knocks on the door of a local farmer and asks for a roof for the night. Curiously, he will not accept a bed in the barn, but wishes only to sleep by the kitchen fire. Late at night, the farmer's daughter comes down to lock the kitchen door. The beggar and daughter exchange words, and fall in love. They sleep together, and through some unmentioned premise, the daughter accuses the man of being a nobleman come dressed as a beggar to woo her. He convinces her that he is indeed only a beggar, and she kicks him out. However, it turns out he was, in fact, a noble. The reel is a folk dance type as well as the accompanying dance tune type. Of Scottish origin, reels are also an important part of the repertoire of the fiddle traditions of the British Isles and North America. In Scottish country dancing, the reel is one of the four traditional dances, the others being the jig, the strathspey and the waltz, and is also the name of a dance figure (see below). James Henry Miller (25 January 1915 – 22 October 1989), better known by his stage name Ewan MacColl, was a folk singer-songwriter, folk song collector, labour activist and actor. Born in England to Scottish parents, he is known as one of the instigators of the 1960s folk revival as well as for writing such songs as "The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face" and "Dirty Old Town". Turlough O'Carolan
Turlough O'Carolan ( ga, Toirdhealbhach Ó Cearbhalláin ; 167025 March 1738) was a blind Celtic harper, composer and singer in Ireland whose great fame is due to his gift for melodic composition. Although not a composer in the classical sense, Carolan is considered by many to be Ireland's national composer. Harpers in the old Irish tradition were still living as late as 1792, and ten, including Arthur O'Neill (harpist), Arthur O'Neill, Patrick Quin and Donnchadh Ó Hámsaigh, Donnchadh Ó hÁmsaigh, attended the Belfast Harp Festival. Planxty Irwin
Planxty were an Irish folk music band formed in January 1972, consisting initially of Christy Moore (vocals, acoustic guitar, bodhrán), Andy Irvine (vocals, mandolin, mandola, bouzouki, hurdy-gurdy, harmonica), Dónal Lunny (bouzouki, guitars, bodhrán, keyboards), and Liam O'Flynn (uilleann pipes, tin whistle).
