Pierre De Saurel
Pierre de Saurel (1628–1682) was a captain in the Carignan-Salières Regiment and a seigneur who was born in Grenoble and came to New France in 1665. Captain Saurel was immediately sent to rebuild Fort Richelieu, the fort having been burned by the Iroquois in 1647. The Carignan-Salières Regiment rebuilt the fort on the same site. During Prouville de Tracy's 1666 action against the Mohawks, he and Alexandre Berthier were co-commanders of the rear-guard troops. Carignan-Salières Regiment
The Carignan-Salières Regiment was a Piedmont French military unit formed by merging two other regiments in 1659. They were led by the new Governor, Daniel de Rémy de Courcelles, and Lieutenant-General Alexandre de Prouville, Sieur de Tracy. Approximately 1,200 men (Piedmont, Savoyard and Ligurian) arrived in New France in the middle of 1665. Formation The Carignan-Salières was formed from two existing regiments: the Balthasar Regiment, formed during the Thirty Years' War and becoming the Salières when Balthasar died in 1665, and the Carignan Regiment, formed in 1644 in Piedmont. Fort Richelieu
Fort Richelieu is a historic fort in La Vallée-du-Richelieu Regional County Municipality, Quebec, Canada. The fort is designated as a National Historic Site of Canada. Fort Richelieu was part of a series of five forts built along the Richelieu River and is at the mouth of the Richelieu River. Iroquois
The Iroquois ( or ), officially the Haudenosaunee ( meaning "people of the longhouse"), are an Iroquoian-speaking confederacy of First Nations peoples in northeast North America/ Turtle Island. Alexandre De Prouville
Marquis Alexandre de Prouville de Tracy (c. 1596 or 1603 – 1670) was a French aristocrat, statesman, and military leader. He was the seigneur of Tracy-le-Val and Tracy-le-Mont ( Picardy). Life The Marquis de Tracy first made his name as a regimental commander in Germany in the 1640s, then was appointed Commissary-General of the French troops serving in Germany. In 1647 he represented France at the Ulm negotiations with Sweden and Bavaria. In 1664 a fleet under the Marquis de Tracy carried a force of soldiers and colonists led by Antoine Lefèbvre de La Barre of the newly formed Compagnie de la France équinoxiale to Cayenne. They left the port of La Rochelle, France, on 26 February 1664 with two warships and 400 soldiers. The expedition included 1,200 settlers. They arrived in Cayenne on 11 May 1664. Alexandre Berthier
Alexandre Berthier (1638–1708) was a captain in the French army who was born Isaac Berthier and a Huguenot. He became known as Alexandre after his arrival in New France in 1665. The name change appears to be because of his conversion to the Roman Catholic religion. He was part of the Carignan-Salières Regiment which arrived in Quebec that year from the West Indies under the command of Prouville de Tracy. Berthier's first posting was as commandant of Fort de l'Assomption and during Prouville de Tracy's 1666 action against the Mohawks, he and Pierre de Saurel were co-commanders of the rear-guard of troops. From 1674, Berthier spent most of his time settling and improving his seigneuries. He did lead a company of his own militia as part of an expeditionary force against the Senecas in 1687. Sorel-Tracy
Sorel-Tracy (; ) is a city in southwestern Quebec, Canada and the geographical end point of the Champlain Valley. It is located at the confluence of the Richelieu River and the St. Lawrence River, on the western edge of Lac Saint-Pierre, downstream and northeast of Montreal. The population as of the Canada 2011 Census was 34,600. Its mayor is Patrick Péloquin and it is the seat of the Pierre-De Saurel Regional County Municipality and the judicial district of Richelieu.
