Pierre Sancan
Pierre Sancan (24 October 1916 – 20 October 2008) was a French composer, pianist, teacher and conductor. Along with Olivier Messiaen and Henri Dutilleux, he was a major figure among French musicians in the mid-twentieth-century transition between modern and contemporary eras; but outside France his name is almost unknown. Life Born in Mazamet in the South of France, Sancan began in musical studies in Morocco and Toulouse before entering the Conservatoire de Paris where he studied with Jean Gallon, conducting with Charles Munch and Roger Désormière, piano with Yves Nat, and composition with Henri Busser. In 1943, he won the Conservatoire's Prix de Rome for composition, with his cantata ''La Légende de Icare'', but did not assume a regular teaching post there until 1956 when his former teacher Yves Nat retired. Olivier Messiaen
Olivier Eugène Prosper Charles Messiaen (, ; ; 10 December 1908 – 27 April 1992) was a French composer, organist, and ornithologist who was one of the major composers of the 20th century. His music is rhythmically complex; harmonically and melodically he employs a system he called ''modes of limited transposition'', which he abstracted from the systems of material generated by his early compositions and improvisations. He wrote music for chamber ensembles and orchestra, vocal music, as well as for solo organ and piano, and also experimented with the use of novel electronic instruments developed in Europe during his lifetime. Messiaen entered the Paris Conservatoire at the age of 11 and studied with Paul Dukas, Maurice Emmanuel, Charles-Marie Widor and Marcel Dupré, among others. Kristin Merscher (born in 1961) is a German classical pianist and professor at the Hochschule für Musik Saar in Saarbrücken, Germany. Life Born in Frankfurt, Merscher began her studies at age eight with Karl-Heinz Kämmerling at the Hochschule für Musik und Theater in Hannover. Jacques Rouvier
Jacques Rouvier (born 18 January 1947 in Marseille) is a French pianist. He studied at the Paris Conservatory with Jean Hubeau, Vlado Perlemuter, Pierre Sancan and later on Jean Fassina. He won two Premiers Prix (first prizes): in piano performance (1965) and in chamber music (1967). Rouvier was remarkably successful at piano competitions in his youth. He won the Grand prize at the Concours des Jeunesses musicales in Montreal in 1965. He took first prize at both the Viotti International Music Competition in Vercelli and the Barcelona Competition in 1967. He then took third prize at the Marguerite Long-Jacques Thibaud International Competition (ex-aequo with Vladimir Viardo) in Paris in 1971, securing an international career. Jean-Efflam Bavouzet (born 17 October 1962) is a French classical pianist. Education Bavouzet was born in Lannion, France and grew up in Metz. He started his music studies there, encountering successful composers including Iannis Xenakis, Olivier Messiaen, Karlheinz Stockhausen and Pierre Boulez. Moving to the Conservatoire de Paris, he studied under Pierre Sancan, among others. He also had private lessons with Georg Solti, and in June 1997 was engaged to play Béla Bartók's Piano Concerto No. 3 (Bartók), Piano Concerto No. 3 with Solti conducting the Orchestre de Paris in 1998. Solti died in September 1997, so they never appeared together in public. Bavouzet won first prize in the Beethoven International Piano Competition in Cologne in 1986.
