Pierre Leon
Pierre Leon (August 23, 1838 – December 7, 1915) was a Captain of the Forecastle in the Union Navy and a Medal of Honor recipient for his actions in the American Civil War. Early life and military service Leon was born in Nice on 23 August 1838. At age eleven, he stowed away on a ship bound to Philadelphia. He served on several coastal steamers until 1860, when he became involved in the development of the ''Alligator'', an experimental submarine. The United States Army Center of Military History (CMH) is a directorate within the United States Army Training and Doctrine Command. The Institute of Heraldry remains within the Office of the Administrative Assistant to the Secretary of the Army. The center is responsible for the appropriate use of history and military records throughout the United States Army. Traditionally, this mission has meant recording the official history of the army in both peace and war, while advising the army staff on historical matters.
