Pico Ruivo
Pico Ruivo is the highest peak on Madeira Island. It can be reached only by foot, usually either from Pico do Arieiro (3rd highest) after a strenuous hike, or from Achada do Teixeira via a shorter, easier trail. There is an additional trail leading west to Encumeada. The hut just below the summit is now open, and there are water tap and toilets available. Ultra Prominent Peak
An ultra-prominent peak, or Ultra for short, is a mountain summit with a topographic prominence of or more; it is also called a P1500. The prominence of a peak is the minimum height of climb to the summit on any route from a higher peak, or from sea level if there is no higher peak. There are approximately 1,524 such peaks on Earth. Some well-known peaks, such as the Matterhorn and Eiger, are not Ultras because they are connected to higher mountains by high cols and therefore do not achieve enough topographic prominence. The term "Ultra" originated with earth scientist Steve Fry, from his studies of the prominence of peaks in Washington (state), Washington in the 1980s. Achada do Teixeira is a mountain and a settlement of the freguesia (parish) of Santana, of the municipality of Santana, Ilha da Madeira. Madeira is a Portuguese island, and is the largest and most populous of the Madeira Archipelago. It has an area of , including Ilhéu de Agostinho, Ilhéu de São Lourenço, Ilhéu Mole (northwest). As of 2011, Madeira had a total population of 262,456. The island is the top of a massive submerged shield volcano that rises about from the floor of the Atlantic Ocean.
