Phytolacca Sandwicensis
''Phytolacca sandwicensis'', also known as Hawai'i pokeweed, is a member of the Phytolaccaceae family and is a flowering and fruit bearing species endemic to the Hawaiian Islands, where it is found on Kauai, Kauaʻi, Oahu, Oʻahu, Molokai, Molokaʻi, Maui, and Hawaii (island), Hawaiʻi. Locally it is referred to as ''pōpolo kū mai'' and/or ''pōpolo.'' ''Pōpolo'' itself is a term for any Solanum species, which its berries resemble. The genus ''Phytolacca'' has about 25 different species within it. They are commonly found in North America, South America, East Asia and New Zealand, with ''Phytolacca sandwicensis'' being the only species exclusively found in the Hawaiian Islands. Hawai'i pokeweed can grow to a size of anywhere from 1 to greater than 3 feet in height and can spread to over 10 feet in diameter. Phytolaccaceae
Phytolaccaceae is a family (biology), family of flowering plants. Though almost universally recognized by Taxonomy (biology), taxonomists, its circumscription has varied. It is also known as the Pokeweed family. The APG II system, of 2003 (unchanged from the APG system, of 1998), also recognizes this family and assigns it to the order Caryophyllales in the clade core eudicots. The family comprises five Genus, genera, totalling 33 known species. In ecology, a mesic habitat is a type of habitat with a moderate or well-balanced supply of moisture, e.g., a mesic forest, a temperate hardwood forest, or dry-mesic prairie.
