Petr Zelenka (director)
Petr Zelenka (born 21 August 1967 in Prague, Czechoslovakia) is a Czech Republic, Czech playwright and director of theatre and film. His films have been recognized at international festivals in Moscow and Rotterdam. In 2008, his film ''Karamazovi'' was the Czech Republic's official Academy Award, Oscar submission for Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film, Best Foreign Language Film. Career An early notable work is a black comedy, ''Tales of Common Insanity'' (2004) ( cs, Příběhy obyčejného šílenství), which he directed at Dejvické divadlo. He received the Alfréd Radok Awards, Alfréd Radok Award for Best Play. The play was later staged in other Czech theatres as well as in Poland, Hungary, Slovakia, Slovenia and Germany. It was also published in English and translated to Russian language, Russian. For his film ''Mnâga – Happy End '' he won the 1996 Findling Award at the Filmfestival Cottbus. ''Wrong Side Up'' ( cz, Příběhy obyčejného šílenství) is a 2005 Czech comedy-drama film written and directed by Petr Zelenka. It is an adaptation of Zelenka's play '' Tales of Common Insanity''. It is a tale of people showing their internal loneliness by their choices in life. It was entered into the 27th Moscow International Film Festival. Plot A former aircrew member (Petr) is no longer flying, but works in an aviation-related dead-end job, loading boxes at an air-cargo company. He spends his working hours dreaming of re-winning the hand of his former fiancée (Jana), who has moved on to another man whose prospects seem better. ''Year of the Devil'' ( cs, Rok ďábla) is a 2002 Czech mockumentary film directed by Petr Zelenka. It stars musicians who act as themselves: Czech folk music band Čechomor, musicians and poets Jaromír Nohavica, Karel Plihal and British musician and composer Jaz Coleman. The soundtrack also includes two pieces by the Killing Joke: ''Frenzy'' and ''Exorcism''. Plot Dutch documentary film director, Jan Holman, goes to the Czech Republic to make a film about curing alcoholism. At an Alcoholics Anonymous meeting he finds a man named Jaromir Nohavica who becomes his friend. ''Samotáři '' (Loners) is a 2000 Czech comedy film directed by David Ondříček. The film stars relatively unknown (at the time) actors such as Ivan Trojan, Jiří Macháček, Jitka Schneiderová and Saša Rašilov and is considered to be a Czech cult classic. The story revolves around seven young people from Prague whose empty and unfulfilling lives gradually intertwine as a result of a series of unforeseen events.
