Petersburg is a city in Grant County, West Virginia, United States. The population was 2,251 at the 2020 census. It is the county seat of Grant County. History Petersburg was founded circa 1745 by Jacob Peterson, who owned the area's first merchandising store. In the 1830 United States Census, the population center of the United States was recorded as being about 9 miles southwest of the town. The settlement was incorporated in 1910. The Manor, also known as Peter and Jesse Hutton Farm, is a historic home located near Petersburg, Grant County, West Virginia. It was built about 1830, and is a -story, L-shaped brick dwelling in the Greek Revival style. It features a two-story portico with pediment supported by four massive square columns. Franklin, West Virginia
Franklin is a town in Pendleton County, West Virginia, United States. The population was 486 at the 2020 census. It is the county seat of Pendleton County. Franklin was established in 1794 and named for Francis Evick, an early settler. History The Town of Franklin is situated in the Allegheny Mountains on the eastern edge of the Monongahela National Forest and along the South Branch of the Potomac River. This region was populated by Native American cultures for centuries prior to the arrival of English immigrants in the mid-18th century. During the French and Indian War, conflict between the early settlers and Native American populations included two battles at frontier fortifications at Upper Tract and Fort Seybert in 1758, both ten miles distant from the future location of Franklin. Old Judy Church, also known as Old Log Church, is a historic Methodist Episcopal church building located near Petersburg, Pendleton County, West Virginia. It was built between 1836 and 1838, and is a rectangular hewn-log building measuring 24 feet wide and 28 feet deep. It was abandoned in 1910, and rededicated in 1936 by the Methodist church. Pendleton County, West Virginia
Pendleton County is a county located in the U.S. state of West Virginia. As of the 2020 census, the population was 6,143, making it the second-least populous county in West Virginia. Its county seat is Franklin. The county was created by the Virginia General Assembly in 1788 from parts of Augusta, Hardy, and Rockingham Counties and was named for Edmund Pendleton (1721–1803), a distinguished Virginia statesman and jurist. Pendleton County was strongly pro- Confederate during the American Civil War; however, there were pockets of Unionists who supported the state government in Wheeling.
