Tumpat District
Tumpat (Kelantanese: Ttupak) is a district (jajahan) in Kelantan, Malaysia. Tumpat is situated at the end of the '' East Coast Line'' railway line operated by Keretapi Tanah Melayu (Malayan Railways) which links Kelantan to the western part of Peninsular Malaysia. This strategic location makes it the transportation hub of Kelantan. Tumpat town is approximately 15 km from the state capital, Kota Bharu. Geography Tumpat is the northernmost constituency in Kelantan, bordering Thailand across the Golok River to the west, Kota Bharu across the Kelantan River to the east, and Pasir Mas to the south, and the Thai district of Tak Bai to the west. Demographics Tumpat has a population about 152,168 (2010), with the majority being the Malays with significant Siamese, Indian and Chinese population. Kelantan
Kelantan (; Jawi: ; Kelantanese Malay: ''Klate'') is a state in Malaysia. The capital is Kota Bharu and royal seat is Kubang Kerian. Kolok River
The Golok River ( th, แม่น้ำโก-ลก, , ; ms, Sungai Golok) is a river that lies on the border between Malaysia and Thailand. It is spanned only by the Malaysian–Thai Friendship Bridge. The name of the river in Malay is ''Sungai Golok'', meaning 'river of machete'. The river borders the Malaysian state of Kelantan and the Thai province of Narathiwat. The friendship bridge connects the Malaysian town of Rantau Panjang and the Thai town of Su-ngai Kolok. Rantau Panjang is a duty-free zone. The river flows into the Gulf of Thailand at Tak Bai District, Narathiwat Province. It floods seasonally with the monsoon. An unusually large flood occurred on 21 December 2009, causing an evacuation of parts of Kelantan. Tak Bai
Tak Bai ( th, ตากใบ, ) is a border town on Malaysia-Thailand Border, the capital of Tak Bai District, Narathiwat Province. Visitors can visit Malaysia by Pengkalan Kubur pass, Kelantan state. Administratively it is a town (''thesaban mueang''), and covers 9.14 km2 of the subdistrict (''tambon'') Che He. As of 2007 it has a population of 17,317. It is the location of the Tak Bai Incident of 25 October 2004 in which at least 85 demonstrators died. History During the 19th century it was known as ''Tabal'', part of the state of Kelantan, then an autonomous tributary state of Siam. Under the 1909 Anglo-Siamese Treaty the Golok River was made the new border and thus Tabal was reassigned to Narathiwat Province. The town was created as a sanitary district ('' sukhaphiban'') in 1956. Like all sanitary districts, it was upgraded to a subdistrict municipality (''thesaban tambon'') in May 1999.
