Parkgate, Dumfries And Galloway
Parkgate is a small village in Dumfries and Galloway, Scotland. The village centre is located just to the east of the A701 approximately north of Dumfries and a few miles east of the Forest of Ae. There is a small primary school located one mile to the east of the village. Parkgate formerly had a Post Office and an inn, the Ae Inn, both of which are now closed. The village is situated in the former parish of Kirkmichael, and Kirkmichael Church is about one mile to the west. Services continue to be held in the Church, albeit not every week. The village is home to two main businesses: Clark Tracks, an engineering business focused on the forestry sector, and James Glen, Motor Engineers. Dumfries and Galloway ( sco, Dumfries an Gallowa; gd, Dùn Phrìs is Gall-Ghaidhealaibh) is one of 32 unitary council areas of Scotland and is located in the western Southern Uplands. Dumfries ( ; sco, Dumfries; from gd, Dùn Phris ) is a market town and former royal burgh within the Dumfries and Galloway council area of Scotland. It is located near the mouth of the River Nith into the Solway Firth about by road from the Anglo-Scottish border and just away from Cumbria by air. Dumfries is the county town of the historic county of Dumfriesshire. Before becoming King of Scots, Robert the Bruce killed his rival the Red Comyn at Greyfriars Kirk in the town on 10 February 1306. The Young Pretender had his headquarters here during a 3-day sojourn in Dumfries towards the end of 1745. Dumfries (') was a constituency of the Scottish Parliament ( Holyrood). It elected one Member of the Scottish Parliament (MSP) by the plurality (first past the post) method of election. It was also one of nine constituencies in the South of Scotland electoral region, which elects seven additional members, in addition to the nine constituency MSPs, to produce a form of proportional representation for the region as a whole. A701 Road
The A701 is a major road in Scotland that runs from Dumfries to Edinburgh. Route The A701 leaves Dumfries and travels north to meet the A74(M) east of Beattock. It then passes beneath the A74(M) before continuing to the north-east towards Moffat and ultimately Edinburgh. The road can be an alternative to the A7 or A702 routes to Edinburgh from the A74(M) and M6. It is signposted as a scenic route to Edinburgh from the motorway. The A701 is popular with motorcyclists and passes close to the edge of the Devil's Beef Tub. It runs also parallel with the former Talla Railway for several miles. Forest Of Ae
The Forest of Ae is located between Nithsdale and Annandale in Dumfries and Galloway in south-west Scotland. The forest was first planted in the 1920s, primarily with Sitka spruce. It has the designation of a 'Priority Forest' for Red Squirrel conservation. The land on which the forest is situated acts as a drainage basin for the Water of Ae, which has a thriving population of otters. The village of Ae was built in the 1940s to house forestry workers. Scotland's Rural College
Scotland's Rural College (SRUC) is a public land based research institution focused on agriculture and life sciences. Its history stretches back to 1899 with the establishment of the West of Scotland Agricultural College and its current organisation came into being through a merger of smaller institutions. After the West of Scotland Agricultural College was established in 1899, the Edinburgh and East of Scotland College of Agriculture and the Aberdeen and North of Scotland College of Agriculture were both established in the early 20th century. These three colleges were merged into a single institution, the Scottish Agricultural College, in 1990.
