Papua New Guinea National Rugby Sevens Team
The Papua New Guinea national rugby sevens team competes in the Pacific Games, Commonwealth Games, Challenger Series and the Oceania Sevens. They finished third in 2009 and fourth in 2010, 2015 and 2016 in the Oceania Sevens. The team has also entered selected World Rugby Sevens Series tournaments as an invited team. The team has been invited to the New Zealand Sevens in 2000, 2001, 2007, 2008, 2010, 2011, 2015, 2017 and 2018, and to the Australian Sevens in 2000, 2009/10, 2010/11, 2011/12, 2017 and 2018. The team has also been invited at the 2000 Fiji Sevens and 2000 Tokyo Sevens . At the 2011 Gold Coast Sevens, PNG defeated Niue and Japan to take 13th place. At the 2018 Hamilton Sevens, the team defeated Russia and France to take 11th place. Papua New Guinea has also played the Hong Kong Sevens World Series qualifier. 2000 Fiji Sevens
The 2000 Fiji Sevens was a rugby sevens tournament held in Fiji as part of the inaugural IRB Sevens World Series. It was the eighth and final edition of the Fiji International Sevens and, in the wake of the Fijian coup d'état later that year, remains the only Fijian event so far included on the World Sevens circuit. The tournament was the sixth leg of the 1999-2000 Series. The competition took place on 11 and 12 February at the National Stadium in Suva. The 2011 Gold Coast Sevens was the first tournament of the 2011-2012 Sevens World Series It was held over the weekend of 25–26 November 2011 at Robina Stadium (known for sponsorship reasons as Skilled Park) in Queensland, Australia. The tournament was the ninth completed edition of the Australian Sevens and the first on the Gold Coast after the event had been previously hosted in Adelaide and Brisbane. Fiji won the tournament by defeating New Zealand in the Cup final 26–12. Format The teams are divided into pools of four teams, and a round-robin played within each pool. The 2011 Adelaide Sevens, promoted as the International Rugby Sevens Adelaide 2011, was a rugby sevens tournament that was part of the IRB Sevens World Series in the 2010–11 season. It was the Australian Sevens leg of the series, held over the weekend of 2–3 April 2011 at the Adelaide Oval in South Australia. The competition was won by New Zealand who defeated South Africa 28–20 in the Cup final. This was the final edition of the Adelaide Sevens, though not of the Australian leg of the IRB Sevens. The Gold Coast became the new host for the next four events beginning in 2011–12. The 2010 Adelaide Sevens, promoted as the International Rugby Sevens Adelaide 2010, was a rugby sevens tournament that was part of the IRB Sevens World Series in the 2009–10 season. It was the Australian Sevens leg of the series, held between 19 and 21 March at the Adelaide Oval in South Australia. Samoa picked up their second consecutive Cup win, following on from their victory in the USA Sevens. In a major surprise, their opponent in the final was the United States, who advanced to their first-ever Cup final. Samoa's 38–10 win enabled them to narrow the gap behind series leaders New Zealand to only 2 points. New Zealand, who were knocked out of the Cup competition by Samoa, gained the consolation prize of the Plate, defeating reigning series champions South Africa in the final. The 2000 Brisbane Sevens, officially called the 2000 Brisbane International Sevens, was an international rugby sevens tournament that was part of the World Sevens Series in the inaugural 1999–2000 season.
