2000 Brisbane Sevens
The 2000 Brisbane Sevens, officially called the 2000 Brisbane International Sevens, was an international rugby sevens tournament that was part of the World Sevens Series in the inaugural 1999–2000 season. It was the Australian Sevens leg of the series, held on 18–19 February 2000, at Lang Park (Suncorp Stadium) in Brisbane. The tournament was the first edition of the Australian Sevens within the World Sevens Series, and was won by Fiji who defeated Australia 24–21 in the Cup final with a sensational try in the final seconds to Waisale Serevi. 1999–2000 World Sevens Series
The 1999–2000 World Sevens Series was the first season of the World Rugby Sevens Series, global circuit for men's national rugby sevens teams, organised by the World Rugby, International Rugby Board (now known as World Rugby). The series ran from December 1999 to May 2000 and incorporated ten tournaments spread over five continents. New Zealand national rugby sevens team, New Zealand was the series champion, winning five of the tournament events. Fiji national rugby sevens team, Fiji finished as runner-up, eight points behind despite winning the remaining five tournaments. The leading try-scorer for the inaugural season was Fiji's Vilimoni Delasau, who notched 83 tries over the series. 1999 South Africa Sevens
The 1999 South Africa Sevens was an annual rugby sevens tournament that took place at the Danie Craven Stadium in Stellenbosch between 10–11 December 1999. It was the first edition of the South Africa Sevens with it being the second leg of the 1999–2000 World Sevens Series. Sixteen teams competed in the tournament and were divided into four groups of four with the top two teams qualifying for the quarter-finals. The hosts, South Africa were eliminated in the semi-finals before Fiji defeated New Zealand 12–10 in the final to win their first sevens title for the series. Australia took home the plate while Tonga won the bowl. Stellenbosch only hosted the South Africa Sevens tournament for one season and the event moved to Durban for the 2000–01 series. The 2000 Paris Sevens was an international rugby sevens tournament that was part of the World Sevens Series in the inaugural 1999–2000 season. It was the France Sevens leg of the series, held on 27–28 May 2000, at Stade Sébastien Charléty in Paris. Ahead of the tournament, which was the tenth and final event of the series, Fiji lead the standings by six points over New Zealand. However, following Fiji's 35–21 defeat by Argentina in the Cup quarterfinals, New Zealand became the inaugural World Sevens Series champions as they defeated South Africa 69–10 in the Cup final. The 2000 Tokyo Sevens was an international rugby sevens tournament that was part of the World Sevens Series in the inaugural 1999–2000 season. It was the Japan Sevens leg of the series, held at Chichibunomiya Rugby Stadium in Tokyo on 1–2 April 2000. The tournament was the ninth event of the series, and was won by Fiji who defeated New Zealand 27–22 in the Cup final. Format The teams were drawn into four pools of four teams each. The 2000 Hong Kong Sevens was an international rugby sevens tournament that was part of the inaugural World Sevens Series, the 1999–2000 season. The 2000 Fiji Sevens was a rugby sevens tournament held in Fiji as part of the inaugural IRB Sevens World Series. It was the eighth and final edition of the Fiji International Sevens and, in the wake of the Fijian coup d'état later that year, remains the only Fijian event so far included on the World Sevens circuit. The 2000 Wellington Sevens was an rugby sevens tournament that took place at the Westpac Stadium in Wellington between the 4–5 February 2000. It was the first edition of the Wellington Sevens and the fifth round of the 1999-2000 World Sevens Series. After finishing on top of Pool B with three straight wins, Fiji took out their third sevens title of the season defeating hosts, New Zealand 24-14 in the cup final to regain the series lead. Canada took out the plate final while France won the bowl final over Croatia. The 2000 Mar del Plata Sevens was a rugby sevens tournament that took place at the Estadio José María Minella in Mar del Plata between the 12–13 January 2000. It was the fourth edition of the Mar del Plata Sevens and was also the fourth round of the held in Argentina as the fourth round of the 1999–2000 World Sevens Series. During the tournament, the first draw in the series history occurred when Samoa and Australia played out an 14-all draw in Pool D. The 2000 Punta del Este Sevens was a Rugby Sevens tournament held in Punta del Este, Uruguay and was the third leg of the 1999-2000 World Sevens Series. The competition took place on 7 and 8 January at the Campus de Maldonado. The hosts, Uruguay were eliminated in the Plate semi-finals. The 1999 Dubai Sevens was an international rugby sevens tournament that took place at the Dubai Exiles Rugby Ground between 2–3 December 1999. It was the 12th edition of the Dubai Sevens with it being inaugural event for the IRB Sevens World Series. Sixteen teams competed in the tournament and were divided into four groups of four teams with the top two qualifying through to the cup quarter-finals. After winning their group, New Zealand defeated Fiji in the cup final by a score of 38–14. 2001 Brisbane Sevens
The 2001 Brisbane Sevens, officially the 2001 Brisbane International Sevens, was a cancelled international rugby sevens tournament, originally scheduled to be part of the second season of the World Sevens Series in 2000-01. The International Rugby Board (IRB) withdrew the World Series hosting rights in response to the Australian government's sporting sanctions against Fiji. The Australian federal government had refused to provide visas to the Fijian 7s squad following the Fiji military coup which had taken place in May 2000. The statement from the IRB in response said: The event had been planned to be held in Brisbane on the weekend of 16–17 February 2001, but was cancelled.
