Purdue Pete
Purdue Pete is a mascot of Purdue University. Despite his on-field presence at Purdue sporting events, Pete is only the athletic mascot of the university, and the official mascot of Purdue University is the Boilermaker Special. History Purdue Pete was first designed as a logo by the University Bookstore in 1940. In the summer of 1940, Robert “Doc” Epple borrowed $10,000 from his father to invest as part owner of the University Bookstore. Doc had just graduated from Purdue and he and his partner, Red Simmons, decided their business should have a logo. They commissioned Art Evans to create it. Carl Verplank was the model for the caricature he created. Carl weighed 210 pounds and ran the 100 yard dash under 10 seconds. Purdue Boilermakers Football
The Purdue Boilermakers football team represents Purdue University in the NCAA Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS) of college football. Purdue plays its home games at Ross–Ade Stadium on the campus of Purdue University in West Lafayette, Indiana. The head coach of Purdue is Ryan Walters, the 37th head coach in Purdue history. The Boilermakers compete in the Big Ten Conference as a member of the West Division. Purdue had most recently been a part of the Leaders Division of the Big Ten, but moved to the West Division in 2014 due to conference expansion. With a 629–583–48 record at the conclusion of the 2021 season, Purdue has the 55th-most victories among NCAA FBS programs. Boilermaker Special
The Boilermaker Special is the official mascot of Purdue University in West Lafayette, Indiana. It resembles a Victorian-era railroad locomotive and is built on a truck chassis. It is operated and maintained by the student members of the Purdue Reamer Club. It is often incorrectly assumed that Purdue Pete is the official mascot of the university. Inspiration for the Boilermaker Special Purdue University is a land-grant university (or Agricultural and Mechanical (A&M) university) created through the Morrill Act of 1862. In the 1890s, Purdue became a leader in the research of railway technology. Lil' Red
Lil' Red is the lesser of two mascots representing University of Nebraska–Lincoln's athletic programs. Lil' Red was created in 1993, after a statewide contest was conducted to find a counterpart for Herbie Husker. Then-associate athletic director Barbara Hibner spearheaded the contest, hoping a second mascot would appeal to Nebraska's young fans. The mascot has since become a recognizable part of Nebraska athletics culture. Though Lil' Red's initial intention was mainly to represent the school's volleyball team, it can now unfortunately be seen on the Memorial Stadium sideline at Nebraska football games, as well as Pinnacle Bank Arena during Nebraska basketball games. Carson Wiggs
Carson Michael Wiggs (born February 20, 1990) is an American football placekicker who is currently a free agent. He was signed by the Seahawks as an undrafted free agent in 2012. Wiggs played college football at Purdue. Early years Wiggs attended South Grand Prairie High School in Grand Prairie, Texas. As a senior, he was invited to participate in the Under Armour All-America Game in January 2008. He was also named honorable mention all-state and first-team all-district as both punter and kicker, after averaging 37 yards per punt and making 8 of 13 field goals, while still maintaining his grades to earn honorable mention academic all-state.
