Puig Major
Puig Major is the highest peak on the Spanish island of Majorca. With an elevation of above sea level. It is situated in the Serra de Tramuntana mountains. As the mountain is located in a military zone, the neighbouring peak Puig de Massanella (1,364 m) is considered the highest accessible summit on the island. The nearest town and municipality to Puig Major is Sóller, a village near the north west coast of Majorca. Military Zone There is currently a military installation, a radar, of the US Air Force at its summit. As a consequence of the Cold War, the first Friendship, Defense, and Cooperation Agreement between Spain and the United States, signed in 1954, agreed on the installation of radar at the top of Puig Major for NATO air control of the Western Mediterranean, starting the works of the new road, barracks, reservoir and radar station in 1955. Serra De Tramuntana
The Serra de Tramuntana (, es, Sierra de Tramontana) is a mountain range running southwest–northeast which forms the northern backbone of the Spanish island of Mallorca. It is also the name given to the comarca of the same area. On 27 June 2011, the Tramuntana Range was awarded World Heritage Status by UNESCO as an area of great physical and cultural significance. Geography The highest peak is the Puig Major, which at 1,436 meters, is the highest mountain in the Balearic Islands. The second highest peak is Penyal de Migdia which is at 1,398 meters. Puig De Massanella
Puig de Massanella is the second highest peak on the Spanish island of Mallorca. It is situated in the Serra de Tramuntana mountains. It is the highest peak on the island whose summit is accessible, as its higher neighbour Puig Major has a military-run antenna complex on the summit. It is a very popular mountain to climb. There is a walking route to the summit from the south, various scrambling routes from a high col to the north, marked with small cairns and red dots painted on rocks, and an easy scrambling route which starts slightly lower down on the south west side of the col. The summit is unusual in having a deep pit which appears to have been formed by limestone dissolution (see Karst) which was said to have been used for storing snow in the past. Sóller
Sóller () is a town and municipality near the north west coast of the Balearic Island of Mallorca, Spain, 3 km inland from Port de Sóller, in a large, bowl-shaped valley that also includes the village of Fornalutx and the hamlets of Biniaraix and Binibassi. The population is around 14,000. The ''Tranvía de Sóller'' tram links Sóller to Port de Sóller.
