Psalmopoeus
Psalmopoeus is a genus of the family ''Theraphosidae'' containing various species of tarantulas. The genus is native to Trinidad and Tobago, Colombia, Ecuador, Venezuela, Guyana, Brazil, Belize, Panama, Nicaragua, Costa Rica, Mexico, Guatemala and Honduras. All of these tarantulas are arboreal in nature, '' Psalmopoeus victori'' being the first arboreal tarantula of Mexico. Venom These species are believed to be relatively venomous, and research in the venom of '' P. cambridgei'' shows it to be similar to capsaicin, the molecule causing irritation in chilli peppers.Anitei, Stefan (2006). Psalmopoeus Irminia
''Psalmopoeus irminia'', also known as the Venezuelan suntiger, is a species of tarantula endemic to Venezuela, Guyana and Brazil. Description ''Psalmopoeus irminia'' are unique in their striking black coloration paired with vibrant orange chevron and leg markings. This species can be very defensive when disturbed, yet also has the ability to accelerate from danger very quickly. Like other ''Psalmopoeus'', this species can often be found in tree cavities at a medium height. Females reach six inches in diagonal leg span on average. Males are Sexual dimorphism, sexually dimorphic, appearing to have much thinner legs as well losing most of their coloration, it can be hard to distinguish them from ''Psalmopoeus cambridgei'' mature males. Like all members of ''Psalmopoeus'' , ''Ps. irminia'' lack urticating hairs. ''Psalmopoeus cambridgei'', the Trinidad chevron tarantula, is a species of spider in the family Theraphosidae, endemic to Trinidad. Its venom is the source of psalmotoxin and vanillotoxin which are classified as inhibitor cystine knot proteins. Psalmotoxin may be of therapeutic use in patients with a stroke. Description The female has chevron-shaped dark markings on the abdomen and her color varies through shades of green and brown with characteristic red or orange flashes on the legs. The mature male is sexually dimorphic, colored a more uniform grey or brown, the body appearing smaller in comparison to the diagonal leg span, reaching five inches (12 cm) on average. Males can reach maturity in as little as one year. The female is very large and fast-growing, reaching seven inches (18 cm) in leg span. It feeds readily and makes an attractive display animal, being fairly active when given correct housing conditions.
