Proletpen
''Proletpen'' ( yi, פּראָלעטפּען) was an organization of Yiddish language writers in the New York City, United States. Proletpen was founded on September 13, 1929 as a continuation of the '' Frayhayt'' Writers Association (which had suffered mass resignations after the newspaper ''Frayhayt'' denounced the role of Zionists in the 1929 Palestine riots). The name 'Proletpen', a Russian-style Yiddish concoction of ''proletarische pen'' ('Proletarian pen'), was projected as an antonym of the Yiddish PEN Club. The group was affiliated with the Moscow-based International Union of Revolutionary Writers. Proletpen predated the John Reed Clubs, a grouping of American English-language progressive writers, by a month. Proletpen poets dealt with social issues, poverty and racism. John Reed Clubs
The John Reed Clubs (1929–1935), often referred to as John Reed Club (JRC), were an American federation of local organizations targeted towards Marxist writers, artists, and intellectuals, named after the American journalist and activist John Reed. Established in the fall of 1929, the John Reed Clubs were a mass organization of the Communist Party USA which sought to expand its influence among radical and liberal intellectuals. The organization was terminated in 1935. Menke Katz
Menke Katz (Yiddish: מעינקע קאַץ; ; April 12, 1906 – April 24, 1991) was an award-winning Yiddish-language and English-language poet and writer of Lithuanian-Jewish descent. He was one of few Yiddish poets based in the United States whose original English poetry also gained prominence. He was an experimentalist of form and an opponent of rhyme, particularly in his English writing. He was the father of Dovid Katz. Morgen Freiheit (original title: ; English: ''Morning Freedom'') was a New York City-based daily Yiddish language newspaper affiliated with the Communist Party, USA, founded by Moissaye Olgin in 1922. After the end of World War II the paper's pro-Israel views brought it into disfavor with the Communist Party and its editor Paul Novick was expelled from the organization. The paper closed in 1988.
