Princess Charming (film)
''Princess Charming'', also known as ''Alexandra'', is a 1934 British musical comedy film directed by Maurice Elvey and starring Evelyn Laye, Henry Wilcoxon, and Yvonne Arnaud. It was made at Islington Studios by Gainsborough Pictures. The film's sets were designed by Ernő Metzner. It is part of the operetta film genre that was popular during the era. Maurice Elvey (11 November 1887 – 28 August 1967) was one of the most prolific film directors in British history. He directed nearly 200 films between 1913 and 1957. During the silent film era he directed as many as twenty films per year. Operetta Film
Operetta films (German: Operettenfilm) are a genre of musical films associated with, but not exclusive to, German language cinema. The genre began in the late 1920s, but its roots stretch back into the tradition of nineteenth century Viennese operettas. Although some silent films had based their plots on stage operettas, the genre was largely a result of the switch from silent to sound films. The 1929 film ''Melody of the Heart'', made by the German studio UFA, is credited as being the first "Operetta film". It had been intended as a silent film, but the dramatic arrival of sound forced its production to be switched. Its combination of music and dancing proved to be a successful formula, and it was followed by many similar films. Neal Arden
Neal Arden (born Arthur Neal Aiston; 27 December 1909 – 4 June 2014) was an English-born actor and writer who appeared in films, television shows, theatre productions and radio programs. He was born in Fulham, London. In 1928, Arden moved to Southern Rhodesia and served in the British South Africa Police (BSAP). Two years later, he returned to Great Britain to pursue an acting career. His screen debut came in the 1934 film version of '' Princess Charming''. Other films include '' "Pimpernel" Smith'', ''John Wesley'' and '' The Shakedown''. He also worked in television, appearing in series like ''Ivanhoe'' and ''Z-Cars''. Cecil Parker (born Cecil Schwabe, 3 September 1897 Р20 April 1971) was an English actor with a distinctively husky voice, who usually played supporting roles, often characters with a supercilious demeanour, in his 91 films made between 1928 and 1969. Ivor Barnard (13 June 1887 – 30 June 1953) was an English stage, radio and film actor. He was an original member of the Birmingham Repertory Theatre, where he was a notable Shylock and Caliban. He was the original Water Rat in the first London production of A. A. Milne's "Toad of Toad Hall". In 1929 he appeared on stage as Blanquet, in "Bird in Hand" at the Morosco Theatre in New York, after a successful run in London's West End (Laurence Olivier was the juvenile). The part had been specially written for him by John Drinkwater. He appeared in more than 80 films between 1921 and 1953. He appeared in the Alfred Hitchcock film '' The 39 Steps'' in 1935.
