Prince Albert City Council is the governing body of Prince Albert, Saskatchewan, Canada. Composition The Council consists of the City's Mayor and eight elected City Councilors, with City Councilors representing the interests of each of the eight wards of the City. History The Council's history dates back to the incorporation of Prince Albert Settlement as a town in 1885, under its first mayor; Thomas McKay. Council members Mayor Peter Gregory Dionne is the current mayor of Prince Albert, Saskatchewan and head of the City Council. Ward 1 Charlene Miller is the current councillor representing Ward 1, which encompasses the West Flat area of the City. Ward 1 currently has the highest percentage of youth of any ward in Prince Albert and is rebranding itself as a vibrant desirable place to live. Prince Albert, Saskatchewan
Prince Albert is the third-largest city in Saskatchewan, Canada, after Saskatoon and Regina. It is situated near the centre of the province on the banks of the North Saskatchewan River. The city is known as the "Gateway to the North" because it is the last major centre along the route to the resources of northern Saskatchewan. Prince Albert National Park is located north of the city and contains a wealth of lakes, forest, and wildlife. The city itself is located in a transition zone between the aspen parkland and boreal forest biomes. Prince Albert is surrounded by the Rural Municipality of Prince Albert No. 461, of which it is the seat, but is politically separate. Ward (politics)
A ward is a local authority area, typically used for electoral purposes. In some countries, wards are usually named after neighbourhoods, thoroughfares, parishes, landmarks, geographical features and in some cases historical figures connected to the area (e.g. William Morris Ward in the London Borough of Waltham Forest, England). It is common in the United States for wards to simply be numbered. Origins The word “ward”, for an electoral subdivision, appears to have originated in the Wards of the City of London, where gatherings for each ward known as “wardmotes” have taken place since the 12th century. The word was much later applied to divisions of other cities and towns in England and Wales and Ireland. Thomas McKay (1 September 1792 – 9 October 1855) was a Canadian businessman who was one of the founders of the city of Ottawa, Ontario. Biography McKay was born in Perth, Scotland and became a skilled stonemason. He emigrated to the Canadas in 1817, and settled in Montreal. He became partners with John Redpath and their firm did the masonry work on the Lachine Canal near Montreal, they then went on to build the locks on the lower section of the Rideau Canal, between the Rideau River and the Ottawa River at Bytown. McKay also built two stone spans for the Union Bridge, which was the first bridge across the Ottawa River between Hull, Quebec and Bytown. The Commissariat building built by McKay in 1827 during the construction of the Rideau Canal now serves as home to the Bytown Museum and is the oldest surviving stone building in the city of Ottawa. Mayor
In many countries, a mayor is the highest-ranking official in a municipal government such as that of a city or a town. Worldwide, there is a wide variance in local laws and customs regarding the powers and responsibilities of a mayor as well as the means by which a mayor is elected or otherwise mandated. Central Business District, Prince Albert, Saskatchewan
The Central Business District or downtown is located in the heart of Prince Albert, Saskatchewan, Prince Albert's downtown core. It is the dominant hub for retail, financial, personal and professional services in the city. Only regional shopping centres are permitted in the area. Many national businesses were housed in the area, but most have moved to other parts of the city. It is located from 2nd Ave West - Central Avenue and extends between 2nd and 3rd Avenue East. It also goes from 15th Street and goes to River Street. The Central Business District is situated in Midtown. Plus it is home to many local businesses, civil, provincial, and federal government services. In the downtown of Prince Albert, many buildings are of architectural and historic value and interest still remain.
