Presque Isle Lake is a lake in the town of Presque Isle, in Vilas County, Wisconsin. It is a recreational lake with sport fishing. Native Americans also spearfish on the lake. History The lake is deep. The lake is known for sport fishing muskellunge. Chippewa Indians exercise their federally protected treaty rights to spearfish walleye on the lake. The activity draws protests from the local residents. The Lac De Flambeau Chippewa Indians were able to spear 449 Walleye from the lake in 1987. Vilas County, Wisconsin
Vilas County is a county in the state of Wisconsin, United States. As of the 2020 census, the population was 23,047. Its county seat is Eagle River. The county partly overlaps the reservation of the Lac du Flambeau Band of Lake Superior Chippewa. History Native Americans Native Americans have lived in what is now Vilas County for thousands of years. The county contains archaeological sites dating to the prehistoric Woodland period. In the eighteenth century, the area was disputed by the Dakota and Ojibwe people. According to oral histories, the conflict culminated in Ojibwe victory in a battle on Strawberry Island in Flambeau Lake around 1745. Ojibwe people have continued to live in the area ever since, securing the Lac du Flambeau Indian Reservation in the 1854 Treaty of La Pointe. The Town of Presque Isle is located in Vilas County, Wisconsin, United States. The population grew impressively and the population was reported by the 2020 Census to be 808. The population was 616 at the 2010 census. The unincorporated communities of Presque Isle and Katinka Village are located in the town. Name The name is a corruption of the French language, ''presqu'ile'' meaning a peninsula. Geography The Town of Presque Isle is located in northwest Vilas County, Wisconsin in the Lake Superior snowbelt region. The muskellunge ''(Esox masquinongy)'', often shortened to muskie, musky or lunge is a species of large freshwater predatory fish native to North America. It is the largest member of the pike family, Esocidae. Walleye
The walleye (''Sander vitreus'', synonym ''Stizostedion vitreum''), also called the yellow pike or yellow pickerel, is a freshwater perciform fish native to most of Canada and to the Northern United States. Wisconsin Walleye War
The Wisconsin Walleye War became the name for late 20th-century events in Wisconsin in protest of Ojibwe hunting and fishing rights. In a 1975 case, the tribes challenged state efforts to regulate their hunting and fishing off the reservations, based on their treaty rights, rights in the treaties of Treaty of St. Peters, St. Peters (1837) and Treaty of La Pointe, La Pointe (1842). On August 21, 1987, the U.S. District Court Judge Barbara Crabb ruled that six Ojibwe (Chippewa) tribal governments had the right under these treaties for hunting and fishing throughout their former territory. Protests erupted in Wisconsin among sports fishermen and resort owners who were opposed to tribal members spearfishing walleye during spawning season. Protests continued into 1991 against the Ojibwe walleye harvests.
