Time Travel (Dave Douglas Album)
''Time Travel'' is an album by Dave Douglas' Quintet which was released in April 2013 on the Greenleaf Music label. Reception The Allmusic review by Matt Collar awarded the album 4 stars out of 5, stating "While Douglas has made his mark delving into various genre-crossing projects that often skirt the edges of hardcore improvisatory jazz, with ''Time Travel'' he has found just as much room to explore within a world of jazz possibilities". Writing for All About Jazz, Troy Collins said "the current incarnation of Douglas' Quintet reflects the independent spirit of a pioneering artist whose intrepid enthusiasm manifests itself in his choice of gifted young collaborators. Lending credence to its title, ''Time Travel'' displays the boundless creativity of a group that derives equal inspiration from both past and future". JazzTimes' Geoffrey Himes stated it "may well be the most mainstream jazz album Douglas has ever released". The New York Times critic Nate Chenin ranked the album si ...

It was released on the Blue Note label in 2015 and features a live performance by Douglas and Lovano with pianist Lawrence Fields, bassist Linda Oh and drummer Joey Baron playing original material and two new compositions by Wayne Shorter. Reception Allmusic awarded the album 4 stars, stating: "Ultimately, Sound Prints walk the line between muscular, tangible post-bop and free-flowing, avant-garde playing; a tantalizing dance that never fails to leave an impression". In JazzTimes, Michael J. West wrote "the real meat of the recording, and of the band, is their interplay: harmony, counterpoint, call-and-response. It’s not what one might expect from a project inspired by Wayne Shorter. But Sound Prints is less about Shorter’s individual style than his audacity and innovation, and on those fronts ''Live' ...

Reception

Writing for , John Shand observed "the American prefers to remind us of the wonder of the piano being equally capable of a delicacy so diaphanous that it rivals a harp. Meanwhile its phenomenal range and harmonic and dynamic potential make it the solo instrument par excellence... This direct-to-two-track analogue recording captures all the dynamism of his solo playing. It seduces with what

Be Still (Dave Douglas Album)
''Be Still'' is an album by Dave Douglas' Quintet with guest vocalist and guitarist Aoife O'Donovan which was released in September 2012 on the Greenleaf Music label. The album was released in response to the loss of his mother. Reception Thom Jurek for Allmusic states, "''Be Still'' is brimming with poetic elegance; but it is also adventurous in its graceful articulation of folk forms (jazz is one of them, after all), and possesses a creativity and musical sophistication that is above all, revelatory". Writing for All About Jazz, Glenn Astarita said "''Be Still'' is a significant entry into Douglas's hefty and multifarious discography. It's a beautiful production, brimming with memorable pieces that sustain recurring listens. Figuratively speaking, the program may be analogous to an elegantly wrapped gift waiting to be opened". PopMatters' Will Layman stated "With ''Be Still'', Dave Douglas seems to be standing both smack in the middle of American art—jazz, sure, but so much ...

Sacred Harp
Sacred Harp singing is a tradition of sacred choral music that originated in New England and was later perpetuated and carried on in the American South. The name is derived from ''The Sacred Harp'', a ubiquitous and historically important tunebook printed in shape notes. The work was first published in 1844 and has reappeared in multiple editions ever since. Sacred Harp music represents one branch of an older tradition of American music that developed over the period 1770 to 1820 from roots in New England, with a significant, related development under the influence of "revival" services around the 1840s. This music was included in, and became profoundly associated with, books using the shape note style of notation popular in America in the 18th and early 19th centuries. Sacred Harp music is performed ''a cappella'' (voice only, without instruments) and originated as Protestant music. The music and its notation The name of the tradition comes from the title of the shape-not ...

Allmusic
AllMusic (previously known as All Music Guide and AMG) is an American online music database. It catalogs more than three million album entries and 30 million tracks, as well as information on musicians and bands. Initiated in 1991, the database was first made available on the Internet in 1994. AllMusic is owned by RhythmOne. History AllMusic was launched as ''All Music Guide'' by Michael Erlewine, a "compulsive archivist, noted astrologer, Buddhist scholar and musician". He became interested in using computers for his astrological work in the mid-1970s and founded a software company, Matrix, in 1977. In the early 1990s, as CDs replaced LPs as the dominant format for recorded music, Erlewine purchased what he thought was a CD of early recordings by Little Richard. After buying it he discovered it was a "flaccid latter-day rehash". Frustrated with the labeling, he researched using metadata to create a music guide. In 1990, in Big Rapids, Michigan, he founded ''All Music Guide' ...
