Poundworld
Poundworld was a chain of British value variety stores that sold most of its items for £1. It was founded in 1974 by Yorkshire-based father-and-son team Chris Edwards Sr. and Chris Edwards Jr. In contrast to many high street retailers, it maintained strong sales and growth during the global recession that started in 2007. Poundworld's product range consisted of over 6,000 items including groceries, health and beauty, toiletries, cleaning products and pet care, some of them known brands. At its peak it had 335 stores in England, Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland. In 2014, it planned to open 150 new stores within three years. Their larger rival in the market was Poundland. A series on BBC One entitled ''Pound Shop Wars'', broadcast between 2012 and 2015, concerned Poundworld and its rivals. Bargain Buys
Bargain Buys is a chain of discount stores operating across the United Kingdom, a subsidiary of Poundstretcher. The chain was launched in 2013 by Chris Edwards Sr. and Chris Edwards Jr., to be a subsidiary of the single-price chain they founded, Poundworld. In 2015, TPG Capital purchased a majority stake in Poundworld and Bargain Buys. TPG Capital went into administration in 2018, with all Poundworld and Bargain Buys stores closed. Later in 2018, Poundstretcher trademarked and began opening new stores nationwide under the Bargain Buys name. A legal dispute between Poundstretcher and businessman Manni Hussain (who purchased the Poundworld assets) began over the 'Bargain Buys' trademark, Poundstretcher won the suit as the Bargain Buys name had not been previously trademarked by Poundworld. Pound Shop Wars
''Pound Shop Wars'' is a British factual television series that was first broadcast on BBC One from 7 November 2012 until 30 September 2015. Narrated by Caroline Aherne, the series shows the competition between rival pound shops, focusing on Poundworld. The second series, comprising eight episodes, began on 12 August 2015. OneBeyond (formerly known as OneBelow) is a British variety store launched by Christopher Edwards and Chris Edwards Sr. Christopher Edwards is managing director while father Chris Edwards Sr is chairman. History In October 2018, it was announced that former Poundworld founders Christopher Edwards and Chris Edwards Sr would be launching their own new variety store, where products are sold for £1 or less. OneBelow was incorporated on 29 September 2018 as OneBelow Retail Limited. One Below would be very similar to Edwards former venture of Poundworld which went into administration in June 2018. On 1 March 2019 OneBelow opened four new stores on the same day, with branches in Doncaster, South Shields and two more in two different areas of Leeds in Kirkstall and Rothwell. Poundland is a British variety store chain founded in 1990. It once sold most items at the single price of £1, including Closeout (sale), clearance items and proprietary brands. The first Pilot (experiment), pilot store opened in December 1990 following numerous rejections by landlords who had reservations about allowing a single-price store to operate, fearing it could adversely affect the local competition. An estimated 7 million customers shopped in Poundland every week in 2016, many being female shoppers in the NRS social grade, C1, C2, D and E categories (the working classes in a system of demography, demographic classification used in the United Kingdom).
