The Poughkeepsie Galleria is a shopping center on U.S. 9 in the Town of Poughkeepsie, New York, located just north of Wappingers Falls, and is the largest shopping center in Dutchess County. The mall is anchored by the traditional chains Macy's, Dick's Sporting Goods, Best Buy, and Target while featuring prominent specialty stores American Eagle, Build-A-Bear, PacSun, Sephora, H&M, Hollister, and Windsor. Poughkeepsie (), officially the Town of Poughkeepsie, is a town in Dutchess County, New York, United States. As of the 2020 United States Census, the population was 45,471. The name is derived from the native term ''Uppuqui'' () meaning "lodge-covered", plus ''ipis'' meaning "little water", plus ''ing'' meaning "place", all of which translates to "the reed-covered lodge by the little water place", or ''Uppuqui-ipis-ing''. This later evolved into ''Apokeepsing'', then into ''Poughkeepsing'', and finally ''Poughkeepsie''. The area includes a large IBM campus noted for its ongoing development and manufacturing of IBM mainframes. South Hills Mall
The Shoppes at South Hills, formerly South Hills Mall, is a shopping mall on U.S. 9, now converted into a strip mall, in the town of Poughkeepsie, New York. The 675,000 ft² plaza opened in 1974 and included two anchors, Sears and Kmart, at opposite ends of the mall. Currently, The Shoppes at South Hills are owned and operated by DLC Management Corporation. The mall is adjacent to its more successful rival, the Poughkeepsie Galleria, and the two properties are linked by a series of roads between the two properties. These roads pass directly in front of a Lowe's. situated on a plot between the Shoppes and the Galleria. The Galleria's existence led to the slow decline and eventual closing of South Hills Mall. Steinbach was a department store chain based in Asbury Park, New Jersey with locations throughout the United States northeast. It opened in 1870 and was purchased by Supermarkets General Corporation (SGC) in the 1960s, and was shuttered in early 1999.
