A demonym (; ) or gentilic () is a word that identifies a group of people (inhabitants, residents, natives) in relation to a particular place. Demonyms are usually derived from the name of the place (hamlet, village, town, city, region, province, state, country, continent, planet, and beyond). Rio Grande do Norte (, , ) is one of the states of Brazil. It is located in the northeastern region of the country, forming the northeasternmost tip of the South American continent. The name literally translates as "Great Northern River", referring to the mouth of the Potengi River. The capital and largest city is Natal. The state has 410 km (254 mi) of sandy beaches and contains Rocas Atoll, the only atoll the Atlantic Ocean. The Potiguara (also Potyguara or Pitiguara) are an indigenous peoples in Brazil, indigenous people of Brazil. The Potiguara people live in Paraíba, in the municipalities of Marcação, Baía da Traição and Rio Tinto, Paraíba, Rio Tinto. Their population numbers sixteen thousand individuals, who occupy 26 villages in 3 reservations (''Indigenous territory (Brazil), Terras Indígenas''): Potiguara, Jacaré de São Domingos e Potiguara de Monte-Mor. The Campeonato Potiguar is the football league of the state of Rio Grande do Norte, Brazil. Format First Division First stage: standard round-robin, in which all teams play each other once. Second stage: home-and-away playoffs between the top 8 teams in the first stage. The winner of this stage is crowned the champion. The team last placed in the first stage is relegated to the second division. As in any other Brazilian soccer championship, the format can change every year. Associação Cultural e Desportiva Potiguar, commonly known as Potiguar or as Potiguar de Mossoró, are a Brazilian football team from Mossoró. They won the Campeonato Potiguar once and competed in the Série A twice. Potiguar is currently ranked fourth among Rio Grande do Norte teams in CBF's national club ranking at 157th place overall. They are the best placed team in the state from outside of Greater Natal. History They were founded on February 11, 1945, as Esporte Clube Potuguar by a group of sportsmen.
