Aram Jules Pothier
Aram Jules Pothier (July 26, 1854 – February 4, 1928) was an American banker and politician of French Canadian descent. He served as the 51st and 55th Governor of Rhode Island. Personal life Pothier was born in Quebec City, Quebec, Canada, the son of Jules Pothier and Domiltilde (Dallaire) Pothier. He attended the common schools in Canada and graduated from Nicolet College in Quebec. At the time of his graduation, his parents had already moved to Woonsocket, Rhode Island, and he moved to Woonsocket to join them. Pothier's father purchased a Pothier House, home on Pond Street around 1881, and Aram Pothier lived in the modest 1.5-story home until his death (while serving as governor) in 1928. He was a clerk for former Congressman Latimer Whipple Ballou, Latimer W. Ballou at the Woonsocket Institute for Savings. Brian Pothier
Brian Pothier (born April 15, 1977) is an American former professional ice hockey defenseman. Pothier played in the National Hockey League (NHL) from 2000 until 2010. Playing career As a youth, Pothier played in the 1991 Quebec International Pee-Wee Hockey Tournament with a minor ice hockey team from Beverly, Massachusetts. Undrafted to the NHL, Pothier played collegiate hockey with Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute. After his senior year he was signed as a free agent by the Atlanta Thrashers on March 27, 2000. After two seasons with the Thrashers he was moved to the Ottawa Senators prior to the 2002–03 season in a trade for Shawn McEachern, and was later signed by the Washington Capitals as a free agent in the summer of 2006. Dom Joseph Pothier, O.S.B. (1835–1923) was a worldwide known French prelate, liturgist and scholar who reconstituted the Gregorian chant. Benedictine life Born in 1835 at Bouzemont, France, Dom Joseph Pothier was ordained a priest in the diocese of Saint-Dié in 1858, before immediately joining St Peter's Abbey, Solesmes under Abbot Dom Prosper Guéranger. By founding, in the then derelict priory of Solesmes, the first new abbey of the Order of Saint Benedict in France, Dom Guéranger had re-established monastic life in the country after it had been wiped out by the French Revolution. Pothier later was made subprior (1862-1863 and 1866-1893) of Solesmes, then claustral prior (1893-1894) of St Martin's Abbey, Ligugé, also a former deserted priory which had been resettled by Solesmes. Robert Joseph Pothier (9 January 1699 – 2 March 1772) was a French jurist. Life He was born and passed away at Orléans. He studied law to qualify for the magistracy, and was appointed Judge in 1720 of the Presidial Court of Orléans, following in the footsteps of his father and grandfather. He held the post for fifty-two years. Pothier paid particular attention to the correction and co-ordination of the text of the Pandects. Toussaint Pothier
Toussaint Pothier (May 16, 1771 – October 22, 1845) was a businessman, seigneur and political figure in Lower Canada. He was born Jean-Baptiste Pothier in Montreal in 1771, the son of Louis-Toussaint Pothier, a merchant and one of the founders of the North West Company. He worked for the Michilimackinac Company, a fur trading company, and, later, for its successor, the South West Fur Company. He purchased the seigneuries of Lanaudière and Carufel in 1814 and also owned a large amount of land in the centre of Montreal. Pothier helped capture Michilimackinac during the War of 1812. In 1820, he married Anne-Françoise, daughter of Ralph Henry Bruyeres. He served as a member of the Legislative Council of Lower Canada from 1824 until it was dissolved in 1838. The Pothier House is a historic house in Woonsocket, Rhode Island. This modest L-shaped -story cottage is notable as the longtime home of Woonsocket mayor (and later Governor of Rhode Island) Aram J. Pothier. Pothier's father purchased the house c. 1881, and it was the younger Pothier's home until his death (while serving as governor) in 1928. Lucien Pothier
Lucien Pothier ( Cuy, 15 January 1883 - Troyes, 29 April 1957) was a successful early twentieth century French racing cyclist who participated in the 1903 Tour de France and finished second. He also rode in the 1904 Tour de France, again finishing second to Maurice Garin. The 1904 Tour was riddled with scandal. The first four winners were among the many riders disqualified. Garin was banned by the French cycling union for two years. Pothier at first received a lifetime ban, but in 1907 he was able to start again in the Tour de France.
