Potchefstroom
Potchefstroom (, colloquially known as Potch) is an academic city in the North West Province of South Africa. It hosts the Potchefstroom Campus of the North-West University. Potchefstroom is on the Mooi Rivier (Afrikaans for "pretty river"), roughly west-southwest of Johannesburg and east-northeast of Klerksdorp. Etymology Several theories exist about the origin of the city's name. According to one theory, it originates from ''Potgieter'' + ''Chef'' + ''stroom'' (referring to Voortrekker leader and town founder Andries Potgieter; "chef" indicates the leader of the Voortrekkers, and "stroom" refers to the Mooi River). Geoffrey Jenkins writes, "Others however, attribute the name as having come from the word 'Potscherf', meaning a shard of a broken pot, due to the cracks that appear in the soil of the Mooi River Valley during drought resembling a broken pot". Johannes Christiaan Coetzee
Johannes Christiaan Coetzee was Rector of the Potchefstroom University for Christian Higher Education and an academic in education. Roots Coetzee was born on 8 March 1893 in Venterstad, Cape Province, South Africa to Mr. Johannes Lodewicus Coetzee and Mrs. Johanna Margaretha Kruger. He married Aletta Johanna van Rooy, daughter of Antonie Charles August van Rooy and Susanna Maria Smit. He died on 6 December 1989 in Pretoria, Transvaal, South Africa. Education He matriculated in Worcester in 1909, obtained a BSc at the Potchefstroom University for Christian Higher Education in 1912, and later earned a MA (Modern Languages), a M.Ed, and a PhD at the same university. Ockert Potgieter
Ockert Potgieter (Ukrainian: Окерт Потгітер; 11 December 1965 – 11 October 2021) was a South African missionary in Ukraine and a film director. Education Potgieter completed his school years at Potchefstroom Gimnasium. He studied further in Law at the Potchefstroom University for Christian Higher Education and after finishing his undergraduate studies he did a PhD in Law. He was awarded the honor of being the best Law student in South Africa. He received the Lawyer’s student award in 1989 from the Loyalty Fund. Jan Theodorus 'Theo' Jansen van Rensburg (born 26 August 1967, in Carletonville), is a former South African rugby union player who played for the South Africa national rugby union team. The Potchefstroom University for Christian Higher Education (abbreviated as PU for CHE) was a South African university located in Potchefstroom. Instruction was mainly in Afrikaans. In 2004, the university was merged with other institutions to create the North-West University. Totius (poet)
Jacob Daniël du Toit (21 February 1877 – 1 July 1953), better known by his pen name Totius, was an Afrikaner poet. He was the son of Stephanus Jacobus du Toit and Elisabeth Jacoba Joubert. Life The poet D.J. Opperman compiled brief biographical notes in Afrikaans about Du Toit. Du Toit began his education at the Huguenot Memorial School at Daljosafat in the Cape (1883–1885). He then moved to a German mission school named Morgensonne near Rustenburg from 1888 to 1890 before returning, between 1890 and 1894, to his original school at Daljosafat. Later he attended a theological college at Burgersdorp before becoming a military chaplain with the Boer Commandos during the Second Boer War. After the war, he studied at the Free University in Amsterdam and received a Doctor of Theology degree. North West is a province of South Africa. Its capital is Mahikeng. The province is located to the west of the major population centre of Gauteng and south of Botswana.
