On 9 August, the European Broadcasting Union (EBU) announced that Portugal would participate in the Junior Eurovision Song Contest 2017 in Tbilisi, Georgia. This was the first time that Portugal has participated in the contest since 2007, with Portuguese broadcaster Rádio e Televisão de Portugal (RTP) being responsible for the selection of their participant. Portugal participated in the Eurovision Song Contest 1998 with the song "Se eu te pudesse abraçar" written by José Cid. The song was performed by the group Alma Lusa.
