Portugal was represented by the song "Silêncio e tanta gente", written and performed by Maria Guinot, at the 1984 Eurovision Song Contest, which took place on 5 May in Luxembourg City. The song was chosen through a national final organised by broadcaster RTP. Maria Guinot (20 June 1945 – 3 November 2018) was a Portuguese singer, best known for her participation in the 1984 Eurovision Song Contest. Biography Born in Barreiro, Portugal, Guinot released two EPs, "La mère sans enfant" and "Balada do negro só" in the late 1960s, then took a long break from the music industry. She returned in 1981 performing a song, "Um adeus, um recomeço", in the Portuguese Eurovision selection, '' Festival da Canção'', where she finished third. Paulo de Carvalho (born Manuel Paulo de Carvalho Costa, in Lisbon, on 15 May 1947) is a Portuguese singer. Career Carvalho co-founded the band The Sheiks in 1965. He sang and played the drums. He also played an instrumental role, either as a founder or a guest, of many other important Portuguese bands of the 1960s, among them bands such as Fluido, Banda 4 and Thilo's Combo. The Sheiks was Portugals answer to the Beatles. During the 1960s Portugal was ruled by an authoritarian dictatorship. This band came as a result of the climate in Portugal and captured the national mood. The people wanted the brightness of the Beatles sound and the Sheiks provided. The band sang songs such as Summertime, Missing You and Tell Me Bird. Fernando Travassos Tordo (born March 29, 1948 in Lisbon, Portugal) is Portuguese singer and songwriter. Since 2003 he has been a Commander of the Order of Merit, an honor bestowed on him by the Portuguese President Jorge Sampaio. Doce was a Portuguese female band from the 1980s. It was one of the first girl bands in Europe. The girls took part in the Portuguese national final in order to represent the country in the Eurovision Song Contest 1980 with the song "Doce" ("Sweet"), but came second, and in 1981 with the song "Ali-Bábá, um homem das Arábias" ("Ali Baba, a man of the Arabias"), reaching 4th place in the national final. One year later, they won with "Bem bom" ("Very good") and went on the Eurovision Song Contest 1982 to reach the 13th position.
