Maria Guinot
Maria Guinot (20 June 1945 – 3 November 2018) was a Portuguese singer, best known for her participation in the 1984 Eurovision Song Contest. Biography Born in Barreiro, Portugal, Guinot released two EPs, "La mère sans enfant" and "Balada do negro só" in the late 1960s, then took a long break from the music industry. She returned in 1981 performing a song, "Um adeus, um recomeço", in the Portuguese Eurovision selection, ''Festival da Canção'', where she finished third. Her second attempt in ''Festival da Cançao'' came in 1984, when her song " Silêncio e tanta gente" ("Silence and So Many People") emerged the winner. Guinot went forward as the Portuguese representative in the 29th Eurovision Song Contest, held in Luxembourg City on 5 May. Barreiro (city)
Barreiro () is a city and a municipality in Setúbal District in Portugal. The population in 2011 was 78,764, in an area of 36.39 km2. Barreiro has a view of the city of Lisbon from Avenida da Praia and a riverside area called Alburrica. The mayor since 2017 has been Frederico Rosa, elected by the Socialist Party. The municipal holiday is June 28. History There are records of the village of Barreiro from as far as the 13th century, when the Military Order of Saint James of the Sword promoted its settlement. Due to the village's location, the main occupation of the population was harvesting salt and fishing. By the time the Portuguese reached India and Brasil (early 16th century), it was in Barreiro that shipbuilding was concluded, since it started in Lisbon during summer and when the rougher weather arrived the construction had to be moved to somewhere with more sheltered conditions. Portugal was present at the Eurovision Song Contest 1985, held in Gothenburg, Sweden. The Portuguese national final to select their entry, the ''Festival RTP da Canção 1985'', was held on 7 March at the Coliseu dos Recreios in Lisbon, and was hosted by Margarida Andrade and Eládio Clímaco. Eleven songs competed at the national final. The votes of national juries chose the winner. The winning entry was "Penso em ti, eu sei", performed by Adelaide Ferreira, composed by Tozé Brito and written by Ferreira and Luís Fernando. Portugal was represented by Armando Gama, with the song "Esta balada que te dou", at the 1983 Eurovision Song Contest, which took place in Munich on 23 April. Gama was the winner of the Portuguese national final for the contest, held on 5 March. The song was chosen through a national final organised by broadcaster RTP.
