Portugal In The Eurovision Song Contest 1976
Portugal was represented by Carlos do Carmo, with the song "Uma flor de verde pinho", at the 1976 Eurovision Song Contest, which took place on 3 April in The Hague. "Uma flor de verde pinho" was chosen as the Portuguese entry at the Grande Prémio TV da Canção Portuguesa on 7 March. Before Eurovision Festival da Canção 1976 The Festival da Canção 1976 was held at the Lumiar studios of the Radio and Television of Portugal in Lisbon, hosted by António Vitorino de Almeida, Ana Zanatti and Eládio Clímaco. Eight songs took part in the final. Thilo Krasmann conducted all the songs. For the first time, only one singer was chosen to perform all the songs: Carlos do Carmo, a highly respected fado singer, was invited to perform the eight songs, chosen by public contest. Carlos Do Carmo
Carlos Manuel de Ascenção do Carmo de Almeida ComIH (21 December 1939 – 1 January 2021), better known as Carlos do Carmo, was a Portuguese fado singer. The son of Lucília do Carmo, a well-known ''fadista'', do Carmo began his career in fado following his father's death in 1962, when he returned from a period in Switzerland to help his mother run the family's fado house. He began singing himself shortly afterwards and, in 1963, he began his career as a recording artist. He continued working at the fado house for a number of years, while also expanding his recording career. He achieved national and international success in the 1970s, including performances at the Royal Opera House in London and the Paris Olympia. Fado
Fado (; "destiny, fate") is a music genre that can be traced to the 1820s in Lisbon, Portugal, but probably has much earlier origins. Fado historian and scholar Rui Vieira Nery states that "the only reliable information on the history of fado was orally transmitted and goes back to the 1820s and 1830s at best. But even that information was frequently modified within the generational transmission process that made it reach us today." Although the origins are difficult to trace, today fado is commonly regarded as simply a form of song which can be about anything, but must follow a certain traditional structure. Portugal has participated in the Eurovision Song Contest 53 times since its debut at the 1964 contest. Since then it has missed five contests (, , , and ). The contest is broadcast in Portugal by Rádio e Televisão de Portugal (RTP). Portugal won the contest for the first time in and hosted the contest in Lisbon. Eládio Taboas Clímaco (born 27 October 1941, in Lisbon) is a Portuguese television presenter best known for hosting ''Festival da Canção'', ''Jeux Sans Frontières'', commentating on the Eurovision Song Contest for RTP viewers, and providing voice narration for many television documentaries. Manuel Alegre de Melo Duarte, GCL (born 12 May 1936) is a Portuguese poet and politician, member of the Socialist Party, and a candidate for the 2006 Portuguese presidential election. Ana Zanatti (born 1949) is a Portuguese theatre, film and television actor, television presenter, novelist, children's book writer, poet and a women's- and LGBT-rights campaigner. Early life Ana Maria Zanatti Olival was born in the Portuguese capital of Lisbon on 26 June 1949.
