La Schiavona
''La Schiavona'' ('the woman from Dalmatia'), also known as ''Portrait of a Lady'', is a 1510–1512 portrait by Titian of an unknown woman. Identity of the sitter The painting was being referred to as ''La Schiavona'' before the beginning of the seventeenth century. However, this name is traditional, given to the painting by someone in recognition of the style of her dress and her physiognomy. In reality, the lady portrayed would have been part of the nobility of the time, with a costume compatible with that of the wealthy women of the territories controlled by the Republic of Venice. Some people have tried to identify the woman as Catherine Cornaro, a hypothesis without any confirmation. Previously assigned to Giorgione, the painting is today commonly accepted as a youthful masterpiece by Titian; further evidence is provided by the absence of the modulated sweetness of the painter from Castelfranco Veneto, replaced rather by a pulsating vitality. Portrait Of A Lady (Titian, Chicago)
''Portrait of a Lady'', formerly known as ''Portrait of Giulia Gonzaga'', is an oil painting by, or possibly after, Titian. It is dated, broadly, to the period 1525–1565. The painting is in the collection of the Art Institute of Chicago. Description The attribution of this picture is uncertain, although it has long been associated with Titian. It is related to ''La Bella'' and '' Girl in a Fur''. It has usually been entitled ''Portrait of Giulia Gonzaga'', but the identification with the Italian noblewoman of that name is no longer accepted; it is now entitled simply ''Portrait of a Lady''.Lloyd 1993, p. 246. Condition The painting is in poor condition, and was cleaned of earlier inpainting in the 1960s. Some paint and ground has been lost in the upper background and in the sitter's hair. The surface of the paint is abraded in places in the background, on the left side of the sitter's face, and on her bosom. Provenance * Private Collection, Italy. * Sold by Böhler and ...

Woman Holding An Apple
''Woman Holding an Apple'', also known as ''Portrait of a Lady'', is an oil painting by Titian, made in around 1550, which hangs in the National Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C. Description The subject stands at three-quarter length, turned to the left, looking at the spectator. She has long blonde hair and fair skin, and holds an apple in her hands. She wears a green robe, with jewelled border, over a white dress with long sleeves and gold border. Analysis In 1940, it was published in '' The Art News'' as "Portrait of a Lady in Green, presumably Giulia di Gonzaga-Colonna, Duchess of Traeetto". In 1941, the Duveen Brothers titled it "Portrait of Giulia di Gonzaga-Colonna resumed. The tentative identification with the Italian noblewoman of that name is not accepted today, and cannot be sustained with any historical source. Indeed, it may not represent a particular woman in the traditional sense of portraiture, but rather an idealised form of female beauty. The model ma ...
