Abraham Portal
Abraham Portal (baptised 1726 – 1809) was an English goldsmith and dramatist. Life He was the son of a clergyman, Peter William Portal, of Huguenot origin. He started in life as a goldsmith and jeweller on Ludgate Hill, but lost money both in this trade and as a bookseller, and finished his career as a box-keeper at Drury Lane Theatre. It appears from his ''Poems'' that Portal was a close friend of John Langhorne. Other friends were Edmund Cartwright and John Scott of Amwell. His brother was the Rev. Andrew Portal, headmaster and usher of Abingdon School. In the spring of 1796 Portal seems to have been living in Castle Street, Holborn. Magda Portal (May 27, 1900 – 1989) was a Peruvian poet, feminist, author, and political activist and leader. She was recognized in the vanguardia poetry literary movement in Peru and Latin America, and she was one of the founders of the APRA (American Popular Revolutionary Alliance) political party. Early life Magda Portal was born on May 27, 1900, in Barranco, near Lima, Peru. As a young woman, she worked during the day, and attended classes at the University of San Marcos during the evening. These classes broadened her views on philosophical and political ideals. During this stage of her life as a young woman, she began her literary career by writing poetry and reporting for magazines. In 1923, Portal was recognized by the prestigious Juegos Florales poetry competition. Admiral Sir Reginald Henry Portal (6 September 1894 – 18 June 1983) was a Royal Navy officer and naval aviation pioneer who served in both world wars. Biography Born near Hungerford, Berkshire, Reginald Portal was the second son of Edward Robert Portal, JP, DL, a country gentleman. His elder brother was Charles Frederick Algernon Portal, later Marshal of the Royal Air Force the Viscount Portal of Hungerford. The family was Huguenot in origin and Reginald Portal was related to the goldsmith and dramatist Abraham Portal, and more distantly so to Wyndham Portal, 1st Viscount Portal. Portal joined the Royal Navy in 1907 and served in the battleship HMS ''Neptune'' before the First World War. Nicolas Portal (23 April 1979 – 3 March 2020) was a French directeur sportif and professional road bicycle racer. He was born in Auch, France. He missed much of the 2009 season because of problems with cardiac arrhythmia and retired as a professional cyclist following the 2010 season. He stayed with his final professional team, Team Sky, as a manager from the 2011 season. Following the retirement of Sean Yates, Portal was appointed lead ''directeur sportif'' of Team Sky for 2013. Michel Portal (born 27 November 1935) is a French composer, saxophonist, and clarinetist. He plays both jazz and classical music and is considered to be "one of the architects of modern European jazz". Early life Portal was born in Bayonne on 27 November 1935. His family was musical and there were several instruments in his house when he was growing up. His interest in jazz began after hearing it on the radio after World War II. He studied clarinet at the Conservatoire de Paris and conducting with Pierre Dervaux. Melville Portal JP, DL (31 July 1819 – 24 January 1904) was a British Conservative Party politician from Hampshire. Career Portal was educated at Christ Church, Oxford, graduating B.A. in 1842, and M.A. in 1844. In 1841 he was treasurer and in 1842 President of the Oxford Union. He was elected as a Member of Parliament (MP) for North Hampshire at a by-election in April 1849, following the resignation of the Conservative MP Sir William Heathcote. He was re-elected unopposed in 1852 at a sparsely attended hustings in Winchester, and retired from the House of Commons at the 1857 general election. Portal was appointed in December 1852 as a Deputy Lieutenant of Hampshire, and by 1863 he was also a Justice of the Peace (JP) for the county. He was nominated as High Sheriff of Hampshire in 1861 and in 1862, and was appointed to the office in 1863, when his address was given as Laverstoke House, Mitcheldever Station. Background Vázquez Portal received a degree in philology from Villa Clara University. Prior to his imprisonment, he worked a variety of jobs, including teaching high school, reporting for state-owned media, and advising at the Ministry of Culture. During his tenure with government media, Vázquez Portal received three official prizes, but in 1995, he was expelled by the National Union of Writers and Artists of Cuba (UNEAC) for expressing dissident opinions.
