Port Kennedy is an outer southern suburb of Perth, the capital city of Western Australia, located within the City of Rockingham. Port Kennedy is built on Becher Point and because of its geomorphological history it is home to an unusual wetland formation, called the Becher Wetland Suite. These wetlands are linear in form rather than circular and have formed in dune swales parallel to the coast. Some wetlands have been absorbed into the Port Kennedy golf course and the remainder are protected in the Port Kennedy Scientific Park. Like Lake Walyungup, located In the east of the suburb, Port Kennedy Scientific Park is part of the Rockingham Lakes Regional Park. Becher Point Wetlands
The Becher Point Wetlands site is a wetland nature reserve in Port Kennedy on the Swan Coastal Plain of south-western Western Australia. The coastal site lies in the City of Rockingham, about south of the state capital, , and is largely surrounded on the landward side by residential suburbs. It comprises about 200 very small wetlands among sand ridges between Becher Point the Perth-Mandurah Road. History and recognition The nature reserve was established in 1996-97; the site is recognised as being of international importance under the Ramsar Convention on Wetlands, under which it was designated Ramsar Site 1048 on 5 January 2001. Arthur Edward Kennedy
Sir Arthur Edward Kennedy (; 5 April 1809 – 3 June 1883) was a British colonial administrator who served as governor of a number of British colonies, namely Sierra Leone, Western Australia, Vancouver Island, Hong Kong and Queensland. Early life and career Arthur Kennedy was born in Cultra, County Down, Ireland on 5 April 1809, the fourth son of Hugh Kennedy and his wife Grace Dorothea (née Hughes). He was educated by private tutor and in 1823–24 attended Trinity College, Dublin, where he met his predecessor as Governor of Hong Kong, Sir Richard Graves MacDonnell. Kennedy entered the British Army, and was gazetted an Ensign in the 27th Foot 11th Regiment on 15 August 1827. Until 1837 he served with infantry regiments on Corfu. John Septimus Roe
John Septimus Roe (8 May 1797 – 28 May 1878) was the first Surveyor-General of Western Australia. He was a renowned explorer, a member of Western Australia's legislative and executive councils for nearly 40 years, but also a participant in the Pinjarra massacre on 28 October 1834. Early life John Septimus Roe was born at Newbury, Berkshire on 8 May 1797. He was the seventh son of James Roe, the rector of Newbury. At 10 years of age, Roe was sent to Christ's Hospital School (which is still standing today) in London, to study for a career as a school teacher. There, he showed a great aptitude for mathematics, and was selected for training by the Mathematical School, which trained selected students for service in the Royal Navy. The Surveyor General of Western Australia is the person nominally responsible for government surveying in Western Australia. In the early history of Western Australia, the office of surveyor general was one of the most important public offices. The first surveyor general, John Septimus Roe, was responsible for the laying out of many townsites, including Perth and Fremantle, and played a prominent role in the politics of the day. Warnbro Sound, an Indian Ocean embayment, is located on the coast of Western Australia south of Cape Peron, 25 kilometres (16 miles) south of Fremantle. Rockingham Lakes Regional Park
Rockingham Lakes Regional Park is a conservation park approximately south of Perth, Western Australia, located within the City of Rockingham. The park, established in 1997, covers a non-continuous area of and occupies approximately 16 percent of the area of the City of Rockingham. In Western Australia, regional parks consist of areas of land that have been identified as having outstanding conservation, landscape and recreation values. The park contains remnants of the once widespread Swan Coastal Plain and two threatened ecological communities, Thrombolites and Sedgelands. It provides evidence of the sea level changes over the past 7,000 years. Rockingham Lakes is one of eleven regional parks in the Perth region of Western Australia. Lake Walyungup
Lake Walyungup is a shallow saline lake in the suburbs of Warnbro and Port Kennedy, located south of the central business district of Perth, the capital of Western Australia. It is part of Rockingham Lakes Regional Park. In the local Nyungar language, Walyungup means "place where Noongars talk". Overview The lake is popular with land sailors, and is bound in the north by Safety Bay Road, in the east by Mandurah Road and in the west by the Mandurah railway line, with the Warnbro railway station bordering the north-western corner of the lake. North of Safety Bay Road, Lake Cooloongup is located. The lake, situated on an Holocene beach ridge, was once connected to the sea and was formed approximately 6,000 to 7,000 years ago.
