Porepunkah
Porepunkah is a town in northeast Victoria, Australia on the Great Alpine Road, at the foot of Mount Buffalo northeast of the state capital, Melbourne and northwest of Bright. It is part of Alpine Shire local government area and on the banks of the Ovens River, near the Buckland River junction. At the , Porepunkah had a population of 941. History European settlement began in the 1830s, but it wasn't until the discovery of gold in the 1850s that development of the town took place. Porepunkah is the nearest modern township to the site of the Buckland Riot, an anti-Chinese race riot that occurred on 4 July 1857. The notorious bushranger Harry Power defied police in the Ovens district for a decade. Power held up the mail coach at Porepunkah on 7 May 1869 after escaping from Pentridge Prison. Porepunkah Airfield
Porepunkah Airfield is located in the Buckland Valley southwest of the township of Porepunkah, Victoria, Australia. It is home to general aviation, ultralight and weight shift aircraft, gliders and occasionally hang gliders. The airfield was originally a local farmer's paddock, and in 1978, formally commissioned as Buckland Airfield and since then has grown into a picturesque grassed airfield with user hangars, public toilets, public car parking and visiting aircraft parking. The recent improvements to the airfield include a new vehicular entrance at the north end of the airstrip and the closure of the original road crossing the airfield. Porepunkah Railway Station
Porepunkah railway station was located on the Bright line serving the town of Porepunkah in Victoria. It opened on 17 October 1890 and closed on 30 November 1983. Bright, Victoria
Bright (pronunciation: ) is a town in northeastern Victoria (Australia), Victoria, Australia, 319 metres above sea level at the southeastern end of the Ovens Valley. At the , Bright had a population of 2,406. It is in the Alpine Shire local government area. Its postcode is 3741. History Hamilton Hume and William Hovell Hume and Hovell expedition, explored the area in 1824, naming the Ovens River. The town was first known as Morse's Creek after F.H. The Ovens River, a perennial river of the north-east Murray catchment, part of the Murray-Darling basin, is located in the alpine and Hume regions of the Australian state of Victoria. The Mount Buffalo National Park is a national park in the alpine region of Victoria, Australia. The national park is located approximately northeast of Melbourne in the Australian Alps. Within the national park is Mount Buffalo, a moderately high mountain plateau, with an elevation of above sea level. On 4 November 1898 an area of was reserved around the plateau and Eurobin Falls as Mount Buffalo National Park, making it one of the oldest national parks in Australia. It flows from the eastern slopes of the Buffalo Range in the Australian Alps, joining with the Ovens River at Porepunkah. Robert Cook (Australian Politician)
Robert Cook (18 April 1867 – 21 May 1930) was an Australian politician. He was a Country Party member of the Australian House of Representatives from 1919 to 1928, representing the Victorian electorate of Indi. Early life Cook was born at Chiltern, Victoria to English splitter Henry Cook and his Irish wife Mary, née Wilkinson. He received little formal education and was soon a land-owner, owning land at Tallangatta and Porepunkah. He married Sarah Anne Weston on 24 December 1894 at Porepunkah; in 1905, they moved to Oxley and established a dairy farm. Local politics Cook was a member of Chiltern Shire Council 1902–04, and was elected to the Shire of Oxley Council in 1908, being its president 1910-11 and 1916–17. He became one of the most active public figures in the Wangaratta district, founding the North-Eastern Co-operative Society Ltd in 1906. Murray To The Mountains Rail Trail
The Murray to Mountains Rail Trail is a cycling and walking rail trail in northern Victoria, Australia. It extends from Wangaratta to Bright, with a side branch to Beechworth, following the route of the former Bright railway line. This side branch trail is planned to be extended from Beechworth to Yackandandah. AU$12m was budgeted by the Victoria State Government for this extension in May 2017. Unusually for a rail trail, it is sealed for virtually the entire distance of approximately 95 kilometres. Another section, from Rutherglen to Wahgunyah on the Murray was completed in 2009. Buckland Riot
The Buckland riot was an anti-Chinese race riot that occurred on 4 July 1857, in the goldfields of the Buckland Valley, Victoria, Australia, near present-day Porepunkah. At the time approximately 2000 Chinese and 700 European migrants were living in the Buckland area. Riot Anti-Chinese sentiment was widespread during the Victorian gold rush. This resentment manifested on 4 July 1857 when around 100 European rioters attacked Chinese settlements. The rioters had just left a public meeting at the Buckland Hotel where the riot ringleaders decided they would attempt to expel all the Chinese in the Buckland Valley. Contemporaneous newspaper reports claim that the riot was "led by Americans 'inflamed by liquor'". During the riot Chinese miners were beaten and robbed then driven across the Buckland River. The Alpine Shire is a local government area in the Hume region of Victoria, Australia, located in the north-east part of the state. It covers an area of and in 2022 had a population of 13,235. It includes the towns of Bright, Dinner Plain, Mount Beauty and Myrtleford. There are two unincorporated areas within the shire: the areas around Mount Hotham and Falls Creek.
