Haarlem (; predecessor of ''Harlem'' in English) is a city and municipality in the Netherlands. It is the capital of the province of North Holland. Haarlem railway station is located in Haarlem in North Holland, Netherlands. The station opened at September 20, 1839, on the Amsterdam–Rotterdam railway, the first railway line in the Netherlands. The station building itself is a ''rijksmonument''. History The original, wooden station was built on the Oude Weg, just outside the Amsterdamse Poort in 1839 to accommodate the passengers of the first railway in the Netherlands between Haarlem and Amsterdam. Arti et Amicitiae (lat .: For Art and Friendship) is a Dutch artist's society founded in 1839, and located on the Rokin in Amsterdam. The Society (also called Arti for short) has played a key role in the Netherlands art scene and in particular in the Amsterdam art schools. Kunst zij ons doel, or KZOD, (English: ''Art be our aim'') is the name of an artists club in the Waag, Haarlem. History The Society was founded in 1821 as the continuation of the ' Haarlemse Teekenacademie', established in 1772 by Cornelis van Noorde, Tako Hajo Jelgersma, Hendrik de Meijer, Christiaan Henning, Leendert Overbeek and Paul van Liender in the fundatiehuis set up by Pieter Teyler van der Hulst, who was one of the directors. After Teyler died they moved to the Warmoesstraat around the corner. That society was started as a drawing academy that was connected to the Haarlem Guild of St. Luke. The drawing academy ran into financial difficulties when the guilds were disbanded in 1794. It died entirely when its most fervent leader, Cornelis van Noorde, died in 1795. Teisterbant Club
The Teisterbant club was the name of an artists' society in Haarlem that flourished between 1950 and 1973. In 1949 the Haarlem writer Godfried Bomans sent out a pamphlet inviting "art practitioners, art-lovers and those interested in art" to join his new society, which could hold its meetings in the basement of the restaurant "Brinkman" on the Grote Markt, Haarlem. The name was taken from the pseudonym of Willem Bilderdijk, a Haarlem writer who had believed he was descended from the Teisterbant family of the Duchy of the same name. The capital of medieval Teisterbant was Tiel. Bilderdijk died in the house next door to Brinkman and the facade has a commemorative gable stone to Bilderdijk. At the opening of the club, in March 1950, Bomans's Teisterbant had managed to attract 180 members, among them Lodewijk van Deyssel (who died that year), Mari Andriessen, Harry Mulisch and Anton Heyboer. Godfried Jan Arnold Bomans (2 March 1913 – 22 December 1971) was a Dutch author and television personality. Much of his work remains untranslated into English. Life and career Godfried Bomans was born in The Hague and grew up in and around Haarlem, where his father had a law office. Already as a pupil in high school Bomans showed literary interest; he became editor of school newspapers and published short stories, even in literary and student magazines.
