Kunst zij ons doel, or KZOD, (English: ''Art be our aim'') is the name of an artists club in the Waag, Haarlem. History The Society was founded in 1821 as the continuation of the ' Haarlemse Teekenacademie', established in 1772 by Cornelis van Noorde, Tako Hajo Jelgersma, Hendrik de Meijer, Christiaan Henning, Leendert Overbeek and Paul van Liender in the fundatiehuis set up by Pieter Teyler van der Hulst, who was one of the directors. After Teyler died they moved to the Warmoesstraat around the corner. That society was started as a drawing academy that was connected to the Haarlem Guild of St. Luke. The drawing academy ran into financial difficulties when the guilds were disbanded in 1794. It died entirely when its most fervent leader, Cornelis van Noorde, died in 1795. Haarlem (; predecessor of ''Harlem'' in English) is a city and municipality in the Netherlands. It is the capital of the province of North Holland. Andreas Schelfhout
Andreas Schelfhout (1787–1870) was a Dutch painter, etcher and lithographer, known for his landscape paintings. Schelfhout belongs to the Romantic movement. His Dutch winter scenes and frozen canals with skaters were already famous during his lifetime. He became one of the most influential Dutch landscape artists of his century. Biography Schelfhout started as a house painter in the framing business of his father. He already started painting pictures in his spare time. After a well-received first exhibition in The Hague, his father sent him to receive proper training to Joannes Breckenheimer (1772–1856), a stage designer, in The Hague. He learned not only the technical aspects of painting, but also made detailed studies of the 17th-century Dutch landscape artists Meindert Hobbema and Jacob van Ruisdael. Anton Heyboer
Anton Heyboer (; 9 February 1924 – 9 April 2005) was a Dutch painter and printmaker. Biography According to the informational booklet "Anton Heyboer: Timeless Work", he was born on the small island of Pulau Weh in the north of Sumatra as the son of a Dutch mechanical engineer and a school teacher."Anton Heyboer: Timeless Work", Heyboer Art Gallery, Den Ilp His father worked in the coal harbour there for Shell Oil and his mother worked in the local school for Dutch children. Edgar Richard Johannes Fernhout (August 17, 1912 - 4 November 1974) was a Dutch painter. Life Fernhout was born in Bergen, North Holland. He was the son of the artist Annie Caroline Pontifex "Charley" Toorop and the philosopher Henk Fernhout. Like his mother and grandfather, Jan Toorop, he was mainly working as a painter. He married Rachel Louise Pellekaan, draftsman, but no children were born from this marriage. After divorce, in 1947 he married Nannette Salomonson, from this marriage one son was born. The youth of Eddy Fernhout was far from harmonious. His parents had a bad marriage, and by constant financial problems, the family could not afford a permanent residence. Ironically, only after the marriage of his parents was finally stranded in 1917, there was some improvement for the family with three children. Jules Chapon
Jules Chapon (4 September 1914 – 6 January 2007) was a Dutch artist who moved to France in 1973. Biography Jules was born in Heemstede as the son of Barend Chapon, an Amsterdam stockbroker who was a member of the Heemstede city council as well as boardmember of the Haarlem Jewish community. His father became a member of the newly formed Heemstede building society Tuinwijk Zuid in 1918 and moved there when this project, designed by the architect J.B. van Loghem, was completed in 1923. One of Jules' first paintings of the back gardens of these houses was probably painted from his bedroom window. Though Chapon first began a career at the brokerage of his father, he took painting lessons from Kees Verwey. The Frans Hals Museum is a museum located in Haarlem, the Netherlands. The museum was established in 1862. In 1950, the museum was split in two locations when the collection of modern art was moved to the '' Museum De Hallen'' (since 2018 called ''Hal)''. The main collection, including its famous 17th-century Frans Hals paintings, for which the museum is named, is located in the former ''Oude Mannenhuis'' on the Groot Heiligland. The museum was founded in 1862 in the newly renovated former Dominican church cloisters located in the back of the Haarlem city hall known as the ''Prinsenhof'', and when it needed more space, it moved to the recently vacated location of the town orphanage in 1913.
