Francization
Francization (in American English, Canadian English, and Oxford English) or Francisation (in other British English), Frenchification, or Gallicization is the expansion of French language use—either through willful adoption or coercion—by more and more social groups who had not before used the language as a common means of expression in daily life. Elvira Popescu
Elvira Popescu (; in French, Elvire Popesco; 10 May 1894 – 11 December 1993) was a Romanian-French stage and film actress and theatre director. During the 1930s and 1940s, she starred in a number of French comedy films. Life and career Popescu was born in Bucharest, and studied drama at the Music and Drama Conservatory in her native city, under the guidance of and Aristizza Romanescu. In 1911 was making the first Romanian films to deal with fiction. He employed Popesco as well as other leading actors like Nottara and Romanescu. The first two films were called "Fatal Love" and "Spin a Yarn". No copies are known of these films. Maria Popesco
Maria Popesco, wife of Victor Popescu (September 4, 1919 – 2004), was a Romanian-born socialite, convicted murderer and memoirist, whose case was at the center of one of the few miscarriages of justice in Switzerland. Born in Bucharest and the daughter in law of Stelian Popescu, a political figure and former Justice Minister, Popesco was arrested in 1945 in Geneva and accused of having murdered her mother in law Lelia Popescu (on June 26, 1945) and her maid Lina Mory (died on July 25, 1945), and for an assassination attempt against her father in law. She was sentenced to life imprisonment, even though critics believe that her guilt has never been proven. Particularly Georges Brunschvig and Anton Gordonoff, two main scientific experts in the case, accused the involved François Naville for wrong arguments concerning the confusion between Veronal and Quadronox. Lucian Popescu
Lucian Popescu (12 January 1912 in Bucharest – 9 December 1982) was a Romanian boxer who won European titles in three different classes. Nicknamed ''Chocolate Boy'' ("băiatul de ciocolată"), he is considered to be the best Romanian boxer between the two world wars. Making his amateur debut on 23 December 1927, he became national champion in the flyweight class in 1928. When he was 17, he decided to turn pro and won his first match against a German boxer. On 7 June 1930, in Bucharest, he challenged flyweight European title holder Kid Oliva, a Frenchman. Having Umberto Lancia as his cornerman, Popescu won his first European belt. Liliana Popescu, née Barbulescu (born 5 February 1982) is a Romanian middle distance runner, who specializes in the 800 metres. Career Her personal best is 1:59.34 minutes, achieved in May 2008 in Bucharest. She has 4:00.35 minutes in the 1500 metres, also achieved in May 2008 in Bucharest. She was removed from the Olympic squad prior to the 2008 Summer Olympics, as she failed a doping test for Erythropoietin (EPO) in May. Irinel Popescu, M.D. (born on 22 April 1953, Filiași) is a Romanian surgeon. He served as the manager of the Department of Surgery and Liver Transplantation at the . Career Popescu studied medicine at Carol Davila University of Medicine and Pharmacy in Bucharest and graduated in 1977. He became a Specialist Surgeon in 1983, and in 1990 he became a General Surgeon, obtaining a PhD from Carol Davila University. In 1997, Popescu, along with a group of other scientists, established Romtransplant, a professional organization for raising awareness of the importance of organs transplantation through several arranged national congresses. Ion Popescu-Gopo
Ion Popescu-Gopo (; 1 May 1923 – 28 November 1989) was a Romanian graphic artist and animator, but also writer, film director, and actor. He was born in Bucharest, Romania. He was a prominent personality in the Romanian cinematography and the founder of the modern Romanian cartoon school. He was, together with Liviu Ciulei and Mirel Ilieșiu, one of the few Romanian film artists who won an award at the Cannes Film Festival in the 20th century. Gheorghe "Gică" Popescu (; born 9 October 1967) is a Romanian former professional football player who played as a defender. He notably played in La Liga where he is a former captain of FC Barcelona. He played for a string of European clubs in that period, including a four-year stint at PSV Eindhoven and winning the UEFA Cup with Galatasaray. He also played in the Premier League with Tottenham Hotspur, in Serie A with Lecce and in the Bundesliga with Hannover 96. Club career Gheorghe Popescu was born on 8 August 1919 in Bucharest, Romania, starting to play junior level football in 1928 at Gloria. Gheorghe Cartianu-Popescu (8 August 1907–26 June 1982) was a Romanian engineer. He was born in Borca, Neamț County. After attending elementary school in his native commune and in Dobrovăț, Iași County, he went to high school in Bacău, graduating in 1926. Cartianu-Popescu then went to Politehnica University of Bucharest to study engineering, while also attending courses at the Faculty of Mathematics of the University of Bucharest. He received his engineering degree from Politehnica University in 1932, and in 1968 he obtained a Ph.D. degree in engineering from the same university. Gabriel Popescu (October 24, 1971 — June 16, 2022) was a Romanian-American optical engineer, who was the William L. Everitt Distinguished Professor in Electrical and Computer Engineering at University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign.
