Pop Song (David Sylvian Song)
"Pop Song" is a song by the English singer-songwriter David Sylvian. The song was released in late 1989 as a non-album single concurrent with the release of the 1989 retrospective box set ''Weatherbox'', though it did not appear on it. (A promo-only sampler released for the box set at the time did include it.) It made its initial official compilation appearance in 2000 on the ''Everything and Nothing'' album. Background When the budget for the single was agreed, Simon Draper at Virgin Records was adamant that Sylvian said he needed some studio time to record "A Pop Song". But Sylvian swore blind that he had said: "It’s called Pop Song. It is NOT 'A' Pop Song..." Sylvian said about the song in 1989: "It’s a strange piece, a real one-off. David Sylvian
David Sylvian (born David Alan Batt, 23 February 1958) is an English musician, singer and songwriter who came to prominence in the late 1970s as frontman and principal songwriter of the band Japan. The band's androgynous look and increasingly electronic sound made them an important influence on the UK's early-1980s New Romantic scene. Following their break-up, Sylvian embarked on a solo career with his debut album ''Brilliant Trees'' (1984). His solo work has been described by AllMusic as "far-ranging and esoteric", and has included collaborations with artists such as Ryuichi Sakamoto, Robert Fripp, Holger Czukay, Jon Hassell, Bill Nelson and Fennesz. While his recordings of the 1980s and 1990s were a mixture of pop, jazz fusion, and avant-garde experimentalism mixed with ambient, his more recent compositions have drawn increasingly on musical minimalism and free improvisation. Richard Barbieri
Richard Barbieri (born 30 November 1957) is an English musician, composer and sound designer. Originally a member of new wave band Japan (and their brief 1989–1991 reincarnation as Rain Tree Crow), more recently he is known as the keyboard player in the progressive rock band Porcupine Tree, which he joined in 1993. Aside from the founder Steven Wilson, he is the longest tenured member of Porcupine Tree. Biography Japan (1974–1982) Although initially perceived as a 'hyped' band, Japan went on to record five studio albums culminating in '' Tin Drum'' which stayed in the UK charts for a year. ''Tin Drum'' is the fifth and final studio album by English band Japan, released in November 1981 by record label Virgin. It peaked at No. 12 on the UK charts, and featured the top 5 single " Ghosts". It has received acclaim as the band's best and most original work. Content ''Tin Drum'' continued the band's now-established mix of electronic elements with traditional instrumentation, but leans far more towards Far Eastern influences than any of their previous albums. Lead guitarist Rob Dean had departed in May 1981 and vocalist/songwriter/second guitarist David Sylvian had taken on his duties, which had been very greatly reduced by the band's change of musical direction. ''Brooklyn Rail'' writer Paul Grimstad described the album's sound as "mannered cubist pop". The Roland D-50 is a synthesizer produced by Roland and released in April 1987. Its features include subtractive synthesis, on-board effects, a joystick for data manipulation, and an analogue synthesis-styled layout design. The external Roland PG-1000 (1987-1990) programmer could also be attached to the D-50 for more complex manipulation of its sounds. It was also produced in a rack-mount variant design, the D-550 (1987-1990), with almost 450 user-adjustable parameters. The D-50's capabilities could be modified through the addition of third-party products by Musitronics, most notably the M-EX which made the D-50 multitimbral (the D-50 was bi-timbral) and expanded the patch memory, as well as a chip that improved the D-50's response to incoming MIDI commands. ''Everything and Nothing'' is a compilation album by David Sylvian. Released in October 2000, the album contains previously released and unreleased, re-recorded, and alternate versions of tracks from Sylvian's twenty years with Virgin Records. The record peaked at no.57 in the UK albums chart. It was released in two versions. A standard 2CD jewel case (CDVD 2897) and (in the UK) as a limited edition 3CD digipak (CDVDX 2897). In addition to tracks from Sylvian's solo career and earlier with the group Japan ("Ghosts"), the album also includes previously unreleased material ("Some Kind of Fool", "The Scent of Magnolia", "Ride" and "Cover Me with Flowers" among others) along with collaborations ("Bamboo Houses" and " Heartbeat" with Ryuichi Sakamoto and "Buoy" with Mick Karn). ''Weatherbox'' is a five-CD limited-edition box set by David Sylvian, released in 1989. Only 5000 copies were produced. The set comprises Sylvian's first four albums: ''Brilliant Trees'', '' Alchemy: An Index of Possibilities'', '' Gone to Earth'' and ''Secrets of the Beehive''; and was, at the time, the only way to acquire all of the songs from ''Gone to Earth'' on compact disc. ''Weatherbox'' is notable for giving each disc entirely new artwork based around the classical elements. The second half of ''Gone to Earth'' was retitled ''Gone to Earth Instrumental'' for this box set. The song "Preparations for a Journey" from ''Alchemy'' was removed, despite being part of the original album, and replaced by two tracks issued as B-sides to the "Pop Song" single.
