The Pontotoc County School District is a public school district based in Pontotoc County, Mississippi (USA). Pontotoc County is a county located in the U.S. state of Mississippi. It has been identified as one of the most corrupt counties in Northern Mississippi. As of the 2010 census, the population was 29,957. Its county seat is Pontotoc. It was created on February 9, 1836, from lands ceded to the United States under the Chickasaw Cession. Pontotoc is a Chickasaw word meaning "land of hanging grapes". The original Natchez Trace and the current-day Natchez Trace Parkway both pass through the southeast corner of Pontotoc County. Ecru is a town in Pontotoc County, Mississippi. The population was 895 at the 2010 census. Ecru is home to the largest upholstered furniture plant in the world which manufactures Ashley Furniture. History Ecru was established by Colonel William Clark Falkner, a prominent post-Civil War businessman. Sherman, Mississippi
Sherman is a town which straddles Lee, Pontotoc, and Union counties in Mississippi. The population was 600 at the 2020 census. History In 1840 Reuben Jones and John Witt settled what is now the Sherman community fourteen miles northeast of Pontotoc, however the town owes its formation and growth to the building of the old Kansas City, Memphis and Birmingham Railroad. When the operation of trains was begun on the newly built railroad in 1886 a station was established and named Sherman by a resident who had formerly lived in Sherman, Texas. R.P. Kelly built the first home in the spring of 1886. Other citizens and businessmen of the town were John Witt, J.E. Wade, and John Johnson. The Mississippi Normal Institute was founded in 1889 by Professor J.N. Davis and a boarding house was maintained in connection with the institute. Randolph, Mississippi
Randolph is a census-designated place and Unincorporated area, unincorporated community in Pontotoc County, Mississippi. State highway 9 by-passes the center of Randolph, which can be accessed by turning onto Randolph Loop, County Road 188. Mostly an agriculture and timber community, there are many farms, sawmills, and even a cotton gin owned by BHF Farms located there. Also, there is a large Amish community nearby, the only one in the deep south. Randolph High School was opened in 1937. RHS provided education for all students for grades 1 through 12. Basketball was the main sport and athletes participated in track and field also. The sports were limited because of the small size of the school, although they did create a football team circa 1965. The mascot for RHS was a "Rambler" which was represented by a line sketch of a tramp with his pack slung over his shoulder on a stick. Pontotoc is a city in, and the county seat of, Pontotoc County, Mississippi, located to the west of the much larger city of Tupelo. The population was 5,625 at the 2010 census. Pontotoc is a Chickasaw word that means, “Land of the Hanging Grapes.” History Pontotoc is a Chickasaw word meaning "Land of Hanging Grapes". The Chickasaw nation occupied this area long before Europeans colonized the Southeast, the last in a succession of indigenous peoples who had this territory for thousands of years.
