Polyrhachis Gracilior
''Polyrhachis gracilior'' is a species of ant found in the southwest and northeast India. It is one of the few ants that build arboreal nests made of leaves stitched together using silk produced by their larvae. Originally described as a "race" of ''Polyrhachis furcata'', it was elevated to a full species by Charles Thomas Bingham, C T Bingham who noted differences in the shape of the spines. A species described from Travancore as ''weberi'' by Horace Donisthorpe in 1943, was identified as being identical to ''gracilior'' by Barry Bolton. Auguste-Henri Forel
Auguste-Henri Forel (1 September 1848 – 27 July 1931) was a Swiss myrmecologist, neuroanatomist, psychiatrist and eugenicist, notable for his investigations into the structure of the human brain and that of ants. For example, he is considered a co-founder of the neuron theory. Forel is also known for his early contributions to sexology and psychology. From 1978 until 2000 Forel's image appeared on the 1000 Swiss franc banknote. ''Polyrhachis'' is a genus of formicine ants found in the Old World with over 600 species. The genus is yet to be comprehensively resolved and contains many varied species including nest-weavers (e.g. ''Polyrhachis dives''), swimming workers (e.g. ''Polyrhachis sokolova''), soil (e.g. ''Polyrhachis proxima'') and tree-dwellers (e.g. ''Polyrhachis bicolor''). Charles Thomas Bingham
Charles Thomas Bingham (16 April 1848, India – 18 October 1908 West Kensington, London) was an Irish military officer and entomologist. Horace Donisthorpe
Horace St. John Kelly Donisthorpe (17 March 1870 – 22 April 1951) was an eccentric United Kingdom, British myrmecologist and coleopterist, memorable in part for his enthusiastic championing of the renaming of the genus ''Lasius'' after him as ''Donisthorpea'', and for his many claims of discovering new species of beetles and ants. Biography Educated at Mill Hill House, Leicester, and Oakham School, Donisthorpe went to Heidelberg University to read medicine. However, his "too sensitive nature" forced him to give up this career. Being possessed of a private income, from about 1890 he devoted his life to the study of beetles and ants, publishing more than three hundred papers on ants alone. Barry Bolton
Barry Bolton is an English myrmecologist, an expert on the classification, systematics, and taxonomy of ants, who long worked at the Natural History Museum, London. He is known especially for monographs on African and Asian ants, and for encyclopaedic global works, including the ''Identification Guide to Ant Genera'' (1994), ''A New General Catalogue of Ants of the World'' (1995, updated in 2007), ''Synopsis and Classification of Formicidae'' (2003), and ''Bolton's Catalogue of Ants of the World: 1758-2005'' (2007). Formicinae
The Formicinae are a subfamily within the Formicidae containing ants of moderate evolutionary development. Formicines retain some primitive features, such as the presence of cocoons around pupae, the presence of ocelli in workers, and little tendency toward reduction of palp or antennal segmentation in most species, except subterranean groups. Extreme modification of mandibles is rare, except in the genera ''Myrmoteras'' and ''Polyergus''. However, some members show considerable evolutionary advancement in behaviors such as slave-making and symbiosis with root-feeding hemipterans. Finally, all formicines have very reduced stings and enlarged venom reservoirs, with the venom gland, specialized (uniquely among ants) for the production of formic acid.
