Djibouti, ar, جيبوتي ', french: link=no, Djibouti, so, Jabuuti officially the Republic of Djibouti, is a country in the Horn of Africa, bordered by Somalia to the south, Ethiopia to the southwest, Eritrea in the north, and the Red Sea and the Gulf of Aden to the east. Nearby Zeila, now in Somaliland, was the seat of the medieval Adal and Ifat Sultanates. In the late 19th century, the colony of French Somaliland was established following treaties signed by the ruling Dir Somali sultans with the French, and its railroad to Dire Dawa (and later Addis Ababa) allowed it to quickly supersede Zeila as the port for southern Ethiopia and the Ogaden. Republican Union (french: Union républicaine) was a political party in French Somaliland. History The Republic Union was founded by Mahamoud Harbi Farah, a member of the French National Assembly. The party contested the 1957 territorial assembly election, winning 61% of the vote and all 30 seats in the assembly. After the election Harbi became vice-president of the governing council of the territory. At the time, the party was allied to the African Democratic Rally. The party advocated the unification of all Somali-speaking areas into one state. Harbi and the Republican Union supported full independence in the 1958 referendum. The Party of Popular Movement (, PMP) was a political party of French Somaliland and the French Territory of the Afars and the Issas. History It was created in 1958 by Somali nationalist militants. Its candidate Moussa Ahmed Idriss was elected deputy of the territory to the French National Assembly in 1962. He sat on the benches of the Union for the New Republic (UNR), the Gaullist party. Its leaders were Obsieh Bouh Abdallah (born in 1932) and Ahmad Farah Dalieh. In 1963, the PMP allied with Ali Aref with which it won the territorial elections. Its leaders signed the agreement of Arta. In 1965, the PMP was joined by activists of the Democratic Union Issa led by Hassan Gouled Aptidon. With the Democratic Union Afar, PMP involved itself in the organization of nationalist demonstrations in Djibouti in August 1966 to mark the passing of General de Gaulle. The formations then split. The Democratic Union Issa (UDI) was an anti-independence political party of French Somaliland and the French Territory of the Afars and the Issas. History It was created in the early 1960s by militants previously allied with Mahmoud Harbi, who, after a schism in the Somalian nationalist movement, sided with his rival, Hassan Gouled Aptidon who led the party. During the 1960s, the UDI included those Issas who opposed the Popular Movement Party, and independence. The Afar Democratic Union (french: Union Democratique Afar, UDA) was a political party of the French Territory of the Afars and the Issas. History Created in 1960–1961 by Orbiss Gaddito and Mohamed Kamil Mohamed, the party was joined by Ali Aref Bourhan and Ahmed Dini in 1962. The UDA won the territorial elections in 1963. In 1965, Ali Aref left the UDA after losing control of the party, instead creating the Afar Democratic Rally (RDA).
