Democratic Union Issa
The Democratic Union Issa (UDI) was an anti-independence political party of French Somaliland and the French Territory of the Afars and the Issas. History It was created in the early 1960s by militants previously allied with Mahmoud Harbi, who, after a schism in the Somalian nationalist movement, sided with his rival, Hassan Gouled Aptidon who led the party. During the 1960s, the UDI included those Issas who opposed the Popular Movement Party, and independence. Then headed by Omar Farah Iltireh, UDI was in favor of maintaining the territory under French sovereignty during March 1967 referendum. In 1967, the IDU had around 100 members. As one of four political parties allowed to stand for election, the party won the local elections in November 1968 in the riding of Ali Sabieh and obtained three seats in the Territorial Assembly. French Somaliland
French Somaliland (french: Côte française des Somalis, lit= French Coast of the Somalis so, Xeebta Soomaaliyeed ee Faransiiska) was a French colony in the Horn of Africa. It existed between 1884 and 1967, at which time it became the French Territory of the Afars and the Issas. The Republic of Djibouti is its legal successor state. History French Somaliland was formally established in 1896 after the Issa and Afar each signed a treaty with the French, but iterations of what will eventually become French Somaliland existed for few decades prior to the official formation. On March 11, 1862, a treaty signed by Afar Sultan Raieta Dini Ahmet in Paris ceded the territory of Obock for 10,000 thalaris, around 55,000 francs. Later on, that treaty was used by Captain Alphonse Fleuriot de Langle to colonize the south of the Bay of Tadjoura. The French Territory of the Afars and the Issas (FTAI; french: Territoire français des Afars et des Issas) was the name given to present-day Djibouti between 1967 and 1977, while it was still an overseas territory of France. The area was formerly known as French Somaliland ('). Its name derives from the Afar people of Djibouti and the Somali Issa clan. Hassan Gouled Aptidon
Hassan Gouled Aptidon ( so, Xasan Guuleed Abtidoon; ar, حسن جوليد أبتيدون) (October 15, 1916 – November 21, 2006) was the first President of Djibouti from 1977 to 1999. Biography He was born in the small village of Gerisa in the Lughaya district in Somaliland. He was born into the politically powerful Mamassan subclan of the Issa clan. He played an important role in Djibouti's struggle for independence from France. Hassan Gouled began his career in the 1930s as a nurse. He was stationed in Dikhil in 1932. He was then an entrepreneur. In 1946, he founded with Mahamoud Harbi Farah the Somali and Dankali Youth Club. They were elected together in 1951 to the Representative Council of the colony, then separated. Hassan Gouled is elected French senator, against Mahmoud Harbi. He remained so from 1952 to 1957. Omar Farah Iltireh ( so, Cumar Faarax Ciiltire) (born 1933 in Ali-Sabieh, Djibouti) is a politician of the French Territory of the Afars and the Issas (TAFI) became the Republic of Djibouti in 1977. He died in France on May 6, 2008. Career He began his career as a teacher before devoting himself to politics. The referendum on independence in 1967, the Democratic Union Issa led by Omar Farah Iltireh called to vote "yes", that is to say, to maintain the territory under French sovereignty. Ali Sabieh ( so, Cali Sabiix, ar, علي صبيح) is the second largest city in Djibouti. It is situated about Southwest of Djibouti City and north of the border with Ethiopia. It sprawls on a wide basin surrounded by granitic mountains on all sides. The famous landmark of Ali Sabieh is located near the city. History The Ali Sabieh settlement is several centuries old. Djibouti is a country in the Horn of Africa. It is bordered by Somalia to the southeast, Eritrea and the Red Sea to the north and northwest, Ethiopia to the west and south, and the Gulf of Aden to the east. In antiquity, the territory was part of the Land of Punt. Djibouti gained its independence on June 27, 1977.
