French Somaliland (; ; ) was a French colony in the Horn of Africa. It existed between 1884 and 1967, at which became the French Territory of the Afars and the Issas. The Republic of Djibouti is its legal successor state. History French Somaliland was formally established in 1896 when the ruler and elders of the Issa clan signed treaties with the French. On March 25, 1885, the French signed a treaty with the Gadabuursi, effectively making them a protectorate of France. On March 26, 1885, the French signed another treaty with the Issa making the latter a protectorate under the French. No money changed hands and the Somalis did not sign away any of their land rights; the agreement was meant to protect their land from outsiders with the help of the French. Hassan Gouled Aptidon
Hassan Gouled Aptidon (; ; October 15, 1916 – November 21, 2006) was the first President of Djibouti from 1977 to 1999. Biography He was born in the small village of Gerisa in the Lughaya district in British Somaliland. He was born into the politically powerful Mamassan subset of the Issa clan. He played an important role in Djibouti's struggle for independence from France. Hassan Gouled began his career in the 1930s as a nurse. He was stationed in Dikhil in 1932. He was then an entrepreneur. In 1946, he founded with Mahamoud Harbi Farah the Somali and Dankali Youth Club. They were elected together in 1951 to the Representative Council of the colony, then separated. Hassan Gouled was elected French senator, against Mahmoud Harbi. He remained so from 1952 to 1957. Omar Farah Iltireh
Omar Farah Iltireh () (born 1933 in Ali-Sabieh, Djibouti) is a politician of the French Territory of the Afars and the Issas, (TAFI) which became the Republic of Djibouti in 1977. He died in France on May 6, 2008. Career He began his career as a teacher before devoting himself to politics. The referendum on independence in 1967, the Democratic Union Issa led by Omar Farah Iltireh called to vote "yes", to maintain the territory under French sovereignty. In November 1968 Omar Farah was elected to the Assembly TFAI of the list headed by Ali Aref Bourhan and was appointed minister of public service in local government. He was elected to the National Assembly French in March 1973, where he replaced Moussa Ali Abdoulkader. Obtaining 26,105 out of 35,230 votes, he defeated Ibrahim Harbi Farah, brother of the militant nationalist Mahmoud Harbi, who got 9125 votes.
