Minong is a town in Washburn County, Wisconsin, United States. The population was 858 at the 2000 census. The Village of Minong is located within the town. Transportation U.S. Highway 53 and Wisconsin Highway 77 are two of the main routes in the community. Geography According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 71.0 square miles (183.9 km2), of which, 64.2 square miles (166.4 km2) of it is land and 6.8 square miles (17.5 km2) of it (9.52%) is water. Vilas County, Wisconsin
Vilas County is a county in the state of Wisconsin, United States. As of the 2020 census, the population was 23,047. Its county seat is Eagle River. The county partly overlaps the reservation of the Lac du Flambeau Band of Lake Superior Chippewa. History Native Americans Native Americans have lived in what is now Vilas County for thousands of years. The county contains archaeological sites dating to the prehistoric Woodland period. In the eighteenth century, the area was disputed by the Dakota and Ojibwe people. According to oral histories, the conflict culminated in Ojibwe victory in a battle on Strawberry Island in Flambeau Lake around 1745. Ojibwe people have continued to live in the area ever since, securing the Lac du Flambeau Indian Reservation in the 1854 Treaty of La Pointe. Settlement The first recorded white settler was a man named Ashman who established a trading post in Lac du Flambeau in 1818.

Mississippi Chippewa
Mississippi River Band of Chippewa Indians ( oj, Gichi-ziibiwininiwag) or simply the Mississippi Chippewa, are a historical Ojibwa Band inhabiting the headwaters of the Mississippi River and its tributaries in present-day Minnesota. According to the oral history of the Mississippi Chippewa, they were primarily of the southern branch of Ojibwe who spread from the "Fifth Stopping Place" of ''Baawiting'' ( Sault Ste. Marie region) along Lake Superior's southern shores until arriving at the "Sixth Stopping Place" of the Saint Louis River. They continued westward across the Savanna Portage, and spread both northward and southward along the Mississippi River and its major tributaries.
